Qadri quoted Gita in Modi-land - Hindustan Times

There's a lesser-known side to the Sufi cleric rocking Pakistan's establishment with his fiery speeches and mass marches: he has a knowledge of Hindu scriptures and made a controversial visit to Gujarat a year ago.

Tahir-ul Qadri, who on Wednesday called on Pakistan's prime
minister Raja Pervez Ashraf to quit by midnight, has attracted tens of thousands on to the streets of Islamabad to protest against corruption.

Aware of his history of closeness to the army, politicians fret that the two may be working in tandem to displace the civilian administration.

But Qadri, who is based in Canada, has a scholarly and secular side to him. His visit to Gujarat last February was marked by a two-hour televised address on the essence of the Gita and the Koran.

And he was a state guest of the government of Narendra Modi, the BJP chief minister who still faces allegations of turning a blind eye to riots that killed Muslims in 2002.

Qadri's advice to Gujarati Muslims to shed their "sense of victimhood" riled many, with leaders of the prominent Jamiat-ul-Ulema organisation accused him of "praising the killer of Muslims" and "calling Muslims terrorists".

Finally, he had to clarify that he "had stressed that no such unfortunate events like riots should repeat and those who perpetrated should face the law."

BJP leader Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, now a minister in the Modi cabinet, was at the event. He said Qadri advocated social and communal harmony and denounced ****** extremism. Chudasama described him as "soft-spoken".

lol with this news the "million man" march of Qadri would reduce to "thousand man" march..

Whats wrong? As claimed, he is a scholar so he must know many scriptures, no?

Many great Imams/Sheikhs of Islam were/are familiar with Qur'an, Bible, Torah, and other scriptures. ALL Catholic priests study Qur'an and Islamic Studies during their course of becoming a priest.

What is so surprising here?

Tahir-ul Qadri was Modi's guest, spoke on Gita

New Delhi: Pakistan’s man of the moment Tahir-ul Qadri, who has triggered a political crisis in the country with a call to 'cleanse the system' there, had visited Gujarat last year.

According to a report published in a leading English daily on Thursday, the Canada-based Qadri was a state guest of the BJP government in Gujarat led by Chief Minister Narendra Modi in February last year.

During his stay in Gujarat, the Sufi scholar gave a two-hour long televised speech on the essence of the Gita and the Koran.

Qadri, who runs an educational and religious organisation with networks all over the world, posses a deep knowledge of Hindu scriptures, which reveal the secular side of his personality.

During his interaction with Muslims in Gujarat, he advised them to shed their "sense of victimhood" despite facing criticism from leaders of the prominent Jamiat-ul-Ulema for "openly praising the killer of Muslims" and "calling Muslims terrorists".

However, the Pakistan cleric later said that no such unfortunate events like riots should be repeated and those who perpetrated should face the law.

Senior BJP leader Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, now a minister in the Modi cabinet, was also present at the event.

Chudasama described Qadri as a "soft-spoken" person, who advocated social and communal harmony and denounced ****** extremism.

The Sufi cleric has been rocking the political establishment in Pakistan with his fiery speeches and mass marches.

On Wednesday, Qadri gave an ultimatum to Pakistan's Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf to quit by midnight.

Qadri is getting immense popular support in Pakistan for his appeal to end corruption and cleanse the rot in the political system there.

The Pakistani cleric wants 'criminals' to be thrown out of politics and vows not to stop until his goals are accomplished.
