Putin's One Day in India Brought $10 Billion to Russia

Putin made a one-day visit to India on March 12. The visit resulted in the signing of more than a dozen of business contracts between Russia and India. The total amount of deals concluded in the defense industry, nuclear power and the field of telecommunications is evaluated at about $10 billion.

Nearly all agreements, which were prepared on the threshold of Putin’s visit to New Delhi, were signed during Putin’s visit.

The situation with the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier, which Russia modernizes for India, was the most complicated issue on the agenda. Russia originally planned to build the vessel by the end of 2008 and raised the issue of extra funding for the project in 2007. The cost of works was overestimated from $1 billion to $2.3 billion. India stopped making payments at all.

Now it seems that the problem has been solved. The two parties conducted closed meetings and signed an additional contract. As a result, India will receive the aircraft carrier at the end of 2012, Russia’s vice prime minister Sergey Ivanov said.

The price of the deal has not been exposed, but sources from the Russian delegation in India said that Russia had managed to receive the extra funding from India to complete the modernization of the ship.

Russia signed another serious contract in Delhi: the agreement to deliver 29 deck-based MiG fighter jets. The jets will be subsequently placed on the Admiral Gorshkov’s deck. The contract is evaluated at over $1.5 billion.

Success was reached in the talks about the cooperation in the nuclear industry. Russia and India agreed to build 16 nuclear reactors.

The two countries also intend to conduct close cooperation in space. Putin particularly said at a news conference that the lunar exploration could be a priority for cooperation between Russia and India.

It is worthy of note that many Russian experts did not believe that Russia would manage to sell deck-based MiG fighters to India. Russia did not have a marine variant of its MiG-29 fighter. Moreover, MiG Corporation was in the middle of a serious financial crisis. That is why, when Delhi signed the deal to purchase 16 deck-based jets for the Admiral Gorshkov in 2004, many specialists thought that Russia would not be able to execute the contract.

However, the first serial MiG-29K successfully landed on the deck of the Admiral Kuznetsov carrier. MiG’s then-chairman Mikhail Pogosyan proved that the government’s support of 30 billion rubles had not been wasted.

Russia’s Defense Ministry purchased 34 brand new MiG-29CMT for the first time since 1992. The new marine version of the renowned Russian fighter is likely to return the profit of $5 billion to the iconic company.

It is worthy of note that Russia’s MiG-35 will take part in nine-billion-dollar tender of the Indian Air Force.

I would ask Russian peoples to send Putin to India for 10 days and i will se how Indian peoples kick him out if they are to make more similar deals like that :rofl::rofl:

Why bring Pak-China in this thread?????? you are de-railing the topic yourself here

I think its India which has gained most from these deals. Russia is ready to sell off anything for a price looking at the current economic scenario. Russia needs money. It can give up anything for it.

We are in talks about a share in the Uranium fields, which contains 5% of the world's uranium. India will gain huge amounts to run its reactors for several decades or even centuries to come.

Also Russia is building reactors in India. That will certainly ease the electricity problem.

About the Mig29k and Gorshkov, then that too is a great deal since our previous carrier is too old for use now. Even Pakfa is India's requirement. Russia could have made it on its own. India would have had to buy it at a higher price. But now we would get the same at cheaper price and also tech through it.

All these deals were critical and required by India. It was not Russia milking Indians for the money but the Indians milking Russia for tech. Once the recession is over, the prices we would have to pay for the same would double up. It is only because of recession that the whole world is interested in selling to India at cheaper rates.

Its more than favors. Its really good business for both sides. Russia gets cash and India gets tech and value for money. Its a mutually beneficial relationship.

@pkd. In addition to all the things Justin Joseph listed, Putin's visit also brought something for people of India and Russia...increased goodwill and stronger relations.

Beautiful plane! Any recent news on AL41 btw? Are you guys going to share that technology with India too? It'd be an amazing gain for India if that's the case, I'm almost jealous lol...

Thanks

Last i heard is that a completely new engine with 175kn is being developed (not related to the AL-41). As for india i do beleive they will receive most key technologies.

Here is a weki quote:

The PAK FA was expected use a pair of Saturn 117S engines on its first flights. The 117S (AL-41F1A) is a major upgrade of the AL-31F based on the AL-41F intended to power the Su-35BM, producing 142 kN (32,000 lb) of thrust in afterburner and 86.3 kN (19,400 lb) dry. In fact, PAK FA already used a completely new engine in its first flight, as stated by NPO Saturn

I simply reported the news item, it was a Russian news site interpreted that way.

And to a great extent i believe in that. There is only one interest in the world that is economic interests. All the defence and other aspects revolve arount that. Goodwill, stronger relations and glossy terms like these are just to satiate the common masses.

Many of the deal were finalized in the past...they are being repeatedly published by the medias of both the sides to keep visiting dignitary in media limelight and portray their visit as a grand success..
Delivery is more important than a deal...
