New Delhi: Russia said it’s ready to lease India more nuclear-powered submarines a day after President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged to deepen defence ties. “If India decides to have more contracts to lease nuclear submarines, we are ready to supply,” Russian trade minister Denis Manturov said in an interview in New Delhi today. The vessels would bolster India’s ability to patrol its waters as it seeks to thwart China’s efforts to extend influence in the Indian Ocean. Russia, whose economy is being pushed toward a recession by sanctions over Ukraine, aims to boost defence sales and deepen its ties to friendlier nations in Asia. “Russia will remain our most important defence partner,” Modi said on Thursday after welcoming Putin to the capital. They discussed a “broad range of new defence projects,” including plans to make one of Russia’s most advanced helicopters in India, he said. India inducted its first nuclear attack submarine from Russia for $1 billion in 2012 under a 10-year contract, which can carry out longer missions and respond faster to threats. It’s fleet of 14 diesel-power submarines are more than a decade old, with half of them commissioned in the 1980s. “Nuclear-powered submarines have assumed far greater significance and changed the complexion of maritime warfare,” then-defence minister A.K. Antony said the induction ceremony. China fleet India is seeking to build up its naval defences amid growing maritime tensions with China. It sent a nuclear submarine to the Indian Ocean in December for a two-month anti- piracy patrol. The waters are home to shipping lanes carrying about 80% of the world’s seaborne oil. China has at least 52 submarines in its fleet, including three nuclear-missile vessels and three operating on nuclear power, the US Congressional Research Service said in July, citing Jane’s Fighting Ships 2013-2014 and previous editions. India has also yet to build a single submarine of the 24 it’d planned starting in 1999, Defence minister Manohar Parrikar told parliament on Friday. Mishaps are also common: an explosion in August 2013 on a diesel-powered submarine, just months after the vessel returned from a $133 million refit at a Russian shipyard, was the worst-ever disaster for India’s submarine program. Putin this week pledged to supply oil, weapons and nuclear power reactors to India. Modi, in turn, reassured the Russian leader that India opposes sanctions and asked Putin to build factories in the country to supply spare parts and components for Russian military equipment. “Russia will have to quadruple its current investments of $3.7 billion in India for the two countries to meet their bilateral trade target of $30 billion by 2025,” Manturov said. “Reaching that target will mean India breaking into Russia’s top five trading partners, up from the current rank of 21,” he said. The two nations said they recognized “the virtually unlimited opportunities for enhancing” their defence cooperation, including joint manufacturing and technology sharing, according to a joint statement on Thursday. India allows foreign direct investment in the defence sector of up to 49%.

great news..... But i think for the best India should buy 2 subs off the shelf from Russia or France

.
Great News ... Surely very concrete conversation took place .What ever it is it seems trust have increased in just 24 hours . Hope india will go for atleast 3 more nuclear subs with ballistic missile capability this will given enough time to develop our Submarines fleet . I guess russia planning to cut cost of maintenance due inflation. Surely the won't do it in China so India is their obvious choice. Russia need to start giving up some of it begar behaviour and cringing about lost tenders . India and Russia can be b the most trustable friends in the history. India has changed . Must understand our current clout. Let's do some real business . As Modi said to Putin when he met for the first time " Even if u ask a kid in India , who is India's friend . They will say Russia"

100%

Transfer of Technology on its latest Bori(am not sure about e spellings?) Class submarine will be a good investment for BRO-Mance. We can start building in numbers and develop smaller Arihant for separate role. Time to act smart and do it in a fashion .

Let's have 40 sub marines as our permanent fleet strength.

 I agree with most of your points mate. India should acquire 3/4 new nuke submarines in lease from russia for next dacade & half. They have screwed us in a few deals so from now on they should behave responsibly.
Russian economy is in dire needs, we should use this opportunity to get as much benefits we can get from them.

About submarine fleet strength, yup 40 is the nunber for our aspiring Indian Ocean dominance.
:welcome:

The leasing of a second Ackula II was always a rumor from the gentlemen in the MoD. Reportedly the Russians offered the 'Ibris', another unfinished hull of the project 971U, for lease to the Indian Navy, the condition being that India pay for the completion of construction.

However, the plural tone of the article is rather interesting. As far as I know, no additional Ackulas are at the moment unfinished, which would imply a new Ackula, a distant possibility, or a new design.

Well, Whatever the reality, This is one interesting development.

$4Billion + on threat which do not exist is unwise.

What would India do with 3-4 SSN's? India does not have a large SSBN fleet which needs Escort,There is only 1 SSBN with India. Pakistan does not have a Navy to speak of. China does not have a base in Indian Ocean, neither does it have Nuclear carriers so it too could not send surface Navy into Indian ocean during war.

So what would these 4-5Billion worth of White elephants do in Indian Navy? With this much money, we could have a Nuclear Aircraft Carrier.

Well to be fair by 2020 India will have 3-4 SSBNs and only 1 SSN (INS Chakra). With the Chinese becoming increasingly assortative in the IOR additional SSNs are needed and an indigenous SSN class is at least a decade away from entering service. I don't think the IN has the time to sit back and wait until then....

.
What new?? Russia has already provide Nuclear subs to India.

You cant buy nuclear subs.

OT:
See, this is why Russia is India`s most important and most reliable partner!

Dude. India would have only 2 SSBN's by 2020.One Arihant and one Aridhman, since only Aridhman is under construction. It still would not Justify such hugh expenditure on SSN's.

Position of Chinese Navy in Indian Ocean is worst than that of British Navy and It is going to remain so for forever.Chinese does not have means of project power in Indian ocean. Andaman and Nicobar Island is close to 4000 Km from Chinese base of Hainan via Malacca straits (shortest distance), and Indian coastline is 5500 Km away. This is beyond range of any Chinese ship without refueling. Also it could not spare ships even if it get capability to do so because of threats it face in SCS and Pacific.

Also leased Akulas do not come with AShCM's as selling missile of more than 300 Km in range is forbidden. They are merely torpedo dispensing platforms.

My contention was that given the fact that we do not have any major threat from Chinese and Pakistani Navy, won't it be wise that we allocate resources to more pressing needs of Navy like conventional Subs and Aircraft carriers?

We could start our own SSN program based on hull of Scorpene for which we have got ToT.

You cant buy nuclear subs.

You can buy Nuclear SSN's but you cannot buy Anti Ship missiles that could be fired from SSN. Sale of SSBN is completely forbidden.

India need only technology. India already has 2 Nuke subs in assembly lines and 1 undergoing sea trials. And that assembly line will continue.

India have INS Chakra from which India can learn !!

I guess @Abingdonboy has already answered my point of view. I am only talking about next dacade, geopolitical situation may chance rapidly.

About the aircraft carrier, mate seriously you can't use it for sneek attack like an ssn.Dont you think.
