Putin in from the cold: Japan breaks rank and admits ISIS can't be beaten without Russia

Since Japan's foreign policy hasn't received as much media attention as yet as Russia's, I wonder whether Abe is sticking to the popular "Assad must go" narrative. @Nihonjin1061

I wouldn't know, to be honest. :)

Isis isnt a group its a ideology all the idiot Russians are doing is contributing to the spread of the ideology

what do you mean by ideology? What is it based on?

Couple of days ago, on this forum itself one of the member said that there is no difference between the ideologies of Wahhabism and ISIS.

I am still confused on if majority of the Sunni Muslims support Wahhabism and ISIS ideology or not. If they do not why are they supporting the Saudi regime which seems to be the originator, owner and propagator of the ideology. The actions on ground by the Islamic nations are contradictory to their professed stand.

I hope it is not the case of people publically opposing while privately supporting the ideology.

Not with that attitude they're going to be defeated.

In an about-turn that will raise eyebrows among Western leaders, the Japanese PM said: "Dialogue with president Putin is very important."

In my opinion, he should start using a stronger language, over time. Also, as much as dialogue is important, also important is the content. Russia and US have been talking to each other from day 1 (as two great powers, they will not act irrationally even at the worst time), but the content does not seem to be favorable for ensuring a quick peace in Syria.

Japan must not only urge dialogue, but also stand more firmly on the Russian side of the conflict.

The timing could not be better for Russia and Mr. Abe has just proven himself a statesman rather than a petty politician -- of course, he still has to deliver what has been projected.

This will be a clear message to the US and its regional allies such as Turkey.

Well Abe seems to be a realist, but I can not discount his own agenda, and making changes to the constitution. But one thing he seems to be right about the importance of Russia in the whole conflict. Russians have the most to gain and it is only them who can dictate terms, Western allies can make all the noise they wish but Putin is the only one who got any real power in Syria now.
Putin might use Syria as leverage against sanctions, since thanks to western media campaign against ISIS and the migrant crisis, at the end of the day Putin is the ultimate winner in this game. Thanks Obama.

Good idea. The entire world should unite against the menace that is ISIS.
You know better than that, ISIS is a symptom of a far deeper disease. ISIS is rapidly loosing ground and it is being strangulated from all sides, its economy is collapsing.

Actually there is a ring of truth to that, if the embattled Sunnis of Iraq and Syria are not provided with a viable alternative this manifestation will continue.

Who funded the Syrian rebels? Was it Russia? Who started and motivated Arab Spring ?

Les we forget. Considering the collective memory of the world seems to be short.....

Well its a scientific fact that collective memory of people is very short. But Obama's indecisiveness have allowed Russia to take full advantage of this situation.

The real menace is not ISIS, really. IS is exportable. I believe after the entire Sham-Iraq dream is shattered, the group will be moving down to another paradise called Libya. They are in fact already on the go. The high ranks are located in Turkey, mainly, but the poorer souls are being offered another dreamland, this time, in Libya.

IS served the purpose and opened an area for Great Kurdistan. Although I feel for the terrible loss of lives and Syria's historical beauties, I can't help admiring the master plan, whoever has constructed it.

Ignore Mr. Erdogan's "O, US!" sermons; he has been used badly in this whole affair. Japan, in this context, is also trying to re-position itself for the post-Great Kurdistan along the winning side. But I am hoping this is a deeply structural shift rather than just a conjectural positioning. @Nihonjin1051 ?

Great powers never lose. They have long memories both toward past and well into future.
