The Opium wars were a very nasty affair, especially for a Hong Konger like myself they are an integral part of our history.

I agree with you, the Unequal treaties that were forced on China , simply trying to enforce the flow of imports to the country, paved the way for future spheres of influence zones in China. The Dauguang Emperor , who ruled during the first and second Opium Wars, should not have enacted a heavy hand on Western imports as he did , which threatened the British military attache, and was used as a catalyst (the British refer to this as a defensive act on their commercial interests) to initiate the First Opium War.

The Dauguang Emperor should have shown more prudence, knowing the military mighty of the Europeans, and should have allowed a limited commercial treaty, whilst biding time to build the military defense and industrialization of China.

We, In Japan, were placed in the same position as China in 1850 when the American Naval Flotilla forced us, at gun point may i add, to either open our ports for trade or be subject to naval bombardment. These were the exact words of the American Commodore Matthew C. Perry. Thus led to the Treaty of Kanagawa, and thus led to Japan's almost fanatical speed of industrialization. The Meiji Government had, at that time, learned from the mistakes of his noble peer, the Dauguang Emperor, of the Great Qing Dynasty.

Do i think that the Unequal treaties and the Opium Wars were preventable? Absolutely, it was.

The referendum was illegal, I do not need to be local to know that.
Look at the Scottish referendum to see how civilised folk get things done.
Illegal was the transfer of Crimea to Ukrainian Soviet Republic in 1954 (in the name of eternal unity of Ukraine with Russia!!!), and re-unification with Russia was completely legal and expressed the will of more than 90% of the local population. If Crimea did not returned to Russia, there would now be a genocide 10 times worse than in the Donbass.
The collapse of the Soviet Union was also illegal. If one day in Moscow announced the restoration of the Soviet Union, then it will be 100% legal.

In fact it was our own fault for being weak. The Century of Humiliation was our own doing.

This is a cruel world, full of suffering.

If you are weak, then others will come to butcher you.

The lesson is, don't be weak. Peace is maintained through strength.

Look, it is well known that the word oligarch is associated with Russia, they took all the wealth after the break up of the soviet union. Google it. It's not a lie, you can investigate within literally 2 seconds.

I am sure some are paedophiles, and they are and will be dealt with. Completely off topic though.

I am well aware of the crimes of our former empire, but to say we killed billions is outrageous. You then invite a Chinese member to lecture me on human rights?? Brilliant.

Besides you hold me responsible for things my ancestors may or may not have committed?

The west doesn't want war, who is currently mobilising thousands of troops on its border? Hint, it's Russia.

Who propped those Oiligarchs?

Hint :West . You can read Godfather of the kremlin, or Hidden Khazaria or anti-communist Juri Lina's under the shadow of Hermes

Considering the level of war crimes by british empire and its mass murder of hundreds of millions to billions ,I cannot consider you an impartial.

Hint: NATO extended itself to russian borders after 1989. Technically NATO is the aggressor.

As an admirer of the Great Qing Dynasty, I will say, in their defense, that they did improve the Imperial Army of China, in part with the use of the Bannermen system, which allowed a speedy mobilization of armies to different regions throughout the vast domain of the Chinese Empire.

Remember, in the late 18th century, the Qianlong Emperor (the Great), who waged 3 wars with the Burmese Overlord King Hsinabyushin, in an attempt to draw out the Burmese occupying army that had sacked Kingdom of Ayudhya (Siam), which was an long time friend and partner of the Chinese Empire. Tactically speaking, Qianlong's military forrays into Burma proved unsuccessful due to the terrain and the subsequent deaths due to malaria, and shortage of supplies, but it did achieve strategic success. Burma had exhausted its forces and supplies in fighting off 3 Qing Armies in its northern Corridor, and had left Ayudhya (Siam) largely unoccupied, and thus led to the revolution of the Thais against Burmese yolk. Thus led to the rise of the Taksin and the subsequent Chakri Dynasty of Siam. The Thais owe their independence , truly, to Qianlong's military intervention.

China , under the Qing, were very interventionalist in regional affairs. What happened was during the latter part of the Qing Dynasty, led to decadence of the Imperial House. The unregulated power of generals throughout the Empire led to Warlordism. Had there been great Emperors such as Qianlong in the 19th century, China would have industrialized by the 18th century or ealry 19th century. And it would have never been placed in such position as the Unequal treaties.

But let us look at this objectively. China had undergone challenges in its recent history, but it has succeeded in the recent epoch in showing its industrial, manufacturing capabilities. Akin to the time when the Tang Dynasty was in power, or the Great Ming Dynasty (now that was a dynasty!!)
