Punjab textile industry suffers record power breakdowns

Textile industry is passing through unprecedented loadshedding in the history of Pakistan, as no such abnormal electricity cuts have ever been made in the past. Accordingly, dire consequences of the prevailing situation are emerging out fast in the textile hubs of the country. Interestingly, no one from among the power distribution authorities are taking ownership of the emergency like situation, which is turning into a mess with every passing moment.
Central Chairman All Pakistan Textile Mills Association Ahsan Bashir said that yhe new government should take stock of the situation to avert a crisis like situation once they step in and hold the control of affairs. It is a bare fact that the textile units are closed from last five days due to highly uncertain situation of electricity on independent feeders. The electricity outages for textile industry on independent feeders on various grids in Punjab, spanning from 18 to 20 hours a day, are hampering the industrial production, employment and exports. The law and order situation in different textile cities may go out of hand if undue delay takes place in resolution of the energy supply issue. Textile workers are badly affected due to closing down of operations and shifts. The affected industry is apprehending large scale lay off throughout the province of Punjab. This emergency situation is inflicting negative impact on timely clearance of export orders due to disruption in energy supply throughout the complete textile value chain. The industry has gotten a relief due to gas supply for three days a week. The caretaker Minister for Petroleum had assured of five days a week gas supply to the Captive Power Plants of textile industry starting from next week. APTMA appreciated the decision of the ministry of supplying gas for three days a week despite the Annual Turnaround (ATA) of the Qadirpur gas field. Chairman APTMA has expressed the hope that the Petroleum ministry would fulfil its commitment of revising the gas supply to five days a week with effect from next week on wards.
