LAHORE: The government of Punjab is setting up a number of fisheries and fish farms that will turn the southern region of Punjab into "a hub of fisheries".

Work is underway on construction of the "biggest fish seed hatchery in Asia" in Rajanpur, in southwestern Punjab, according to a tweet from the official account of the Punjab government.

To meet the requirement of fish seeds of fish farmers in Bahawalpur, the fisheries department has provided five million fish seeds for the private and public sectors.

The provincial government has also set up fish farms on an area of 500 acres in Derawar, Bahawalpur in an attempt to develop fisheries there.

Additionally, a hatchery is being established in Muzaffargarh for breeding fish in salt water.
The recorded consumption of fish and fish products is the lowest in Pakistan and the highest in Sri Lanka in the South Asian region, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said in Dec last year.

The national consumption figure, based on the household consumption survey of 2011, was 0.6kg.

The FAO survey report attributed the low figure to the tendency to export much of the fish production and the low purchasing power of a majority of the country’s citizens.

Pakistan’s seafood exports in 2014-15 stood at 140,639 tonnes ($349.5m) compared to 150,498 tonnes ($369m) in 2013-14. The average unit price in FY15 was $2.49 per kg versus $2.45 in the preceding year.

Ok I find it a very productive plan. It also can help to provide job opportunities to many. Make good money out of it. Appreciable initiative. I hope this plan will be executed and not like many other plans are ignored with even spending heavy amount of money on.

A salt water hatchery at Muzaffargarh ? That's strange. Muzaffargarh is a long distance from sea. Wouldn't some place near the sea be better.

.
I hope this does not turns out to be another mafia like poultry.

Good Idea as our fishermen lack good equipment , boats and modern fishing techniques this would help the increase the exports of fish . :drag:

This is awesome news. Seafood Industry, and ONLY Fish market globally in 2012 was at the size of $ 129 Billion. Add all other types of sea food, and it should now be topping $ 200 billion. Pakistan can get some extra billions easily.

Fish has scientifically proven benefits in preventing the hart disease and lowering Cholesterol, as well as keeping the arteries clean from clogging up. So there is a LOT of emphasis within the Western world to eat Fish, two three times a day. In the US, the nation is going away from Hamburgers as being the food of choice and Fish is being adapted in daily meals, more and more. Every other doctor tells you to take Fish Oil and eat Fish. So the demand is growing, specially for Salmon, Tuna, Tilapia, Mackerel, Flounder, etc (white meat), while red meat (Cow meat, Goat meat, etc, produces high level of Cholesterol, resulting in heart attacks and even death).

So as you all read it, please include FISH in YOUR diet. Indian, Pakistan diet is VERY rich in Cholesterol anyway, so save yourselves from heart disease, eat more Fish and walk / run three - five times a week, scientifically, this is proven to link to living longer.

But this is a great start for Pakistan's fishing industry from a business, job growth, farming initiatives and from a health and medical standpoint as more and more awareness of the benefit of eating Fish would mean more people eating it and more internal and external $$$$ for Pakistan.

Ok I find it a very productive plan. It also can help to provide job opportunities to many. Make good money out of it. Appreciable initiative. I hope this plan will be executed and not like many other plans are ignored with even spending heavy amount of money on.

Why the bias in these posts? What project have "NOT" been executed, and ignored and heavy spending of money took place without results? Care to elaborate? This is an issue I have with people. To add their own little version of political stuff, they in one sentence show that there is so much evil in the world. How about we quantify it? I can say I am the King of England, but does it mean anything? He's much older than I am and I don't want to be that old. So care to elaborate which projects were you referring to? Let's check facts!!

Sir, I usually avoid criticizing the government. There are many huge projects, millions/billions worth, but failed. Nandi pur, Danish school system, yellow cabs are few examples.

Do you hav facts these are failed? Scientific and integrated project management even in the US and Europe, will tell you that EVERY SINGLE project, during its course, hits its critical path. Where, to get things done on time, you may need to put more $$$$ in it, or delay it, or do both. In fact. 30% of ALL large projects failed. So why blame the government for everything? Are NS and SS running both of these projects individually?

On Nandi Pur, this entire thing started on Mushy, but he's not to be blamed in not making sure to keep such expensive machinery in an environmentally safer place??, then came Zardari, he was even worst, he put everything in a damp storage. HUNDREDS of millions of super sensitive technology was just thrown in a corner for years. And then came the people working in the government right now. They were told by professional engineers from Tarbela and other power stations that this is just a matter of installation. Well, that didn't quiet work. And the results are in front of us. It took considerably more money, and they had to bring the Chinese back into the project, and then replace about half the generators part. So ALL these complexities are on a government when all they tried to do, was to listen to professionals and act on it and provide funding? No 10 years of history should be remembered? By the way, for the past few months, this power plant is running above initial production estimates......it is producing between 424 and 460 MGW. That's a lot more than the initial projections. With 50 MGW, you could run a city of 50,000 people and all businesses in it without the power outages. So they are over producing to shorten the loss, which makes perfect sense.

The reason you see me writing is because the people you and others conveniently blame for your own selfish reasons, aren't here to defend themselves. So the real story, if I happen to know it, I'd try to put out in there defense as that's the right thing to do.

Who told you Danish school system is flopped? Have you been to one? I was taken to three when I visited Pakistan a few years ago. You should go and ask the kids about how "failed" it is. For you, you get free schooling till high school in the US. For those kids, these schools are the ONLY way to get ahead in life. Not to mention, their IT labs were designed and implemented by America's DELL Computers directly. So if these Danish schools are running sophisticated American IT labs by DELL, you can be rest assured, this isn't a failed project. There is a limit of bias and many people cross that out of selfishness and on purpose make others look bad.

Lastly, the Yellow Cab scheme, how is it failed (I am not a big fan of it personally), but its not failed. As of today, they are doing tests in Lahore, to give people free Cab service for 4 days. That is to get the people to know the service, and also get an idea on how cheaper it would be, if they started to use it. In NYC, common citizens use cabs. Not the billionaires, same will be the case for Pakistan too, as her middle class grows. Hope I was able to clear some confusion. Always do the right thing and give credit no matter how much personal bias you may or may not have!!
