It sure does relate to it being old and a trade center at major crossroads (thus gateway name rights just like "arabic" numerals).

Continously inhabited urban center...one would also need to read outside abrahamic religions and then look at the relevant archaeology evidence (this becomes fairly difficult in lot of cases so its left somewhat to conjecture). This will be ongoing debate depending on definition and earliest artefact/testimony dates found.
