LAHORE: The Punjab government is determined to ensure equal opportunities for women in the workplace in line with global best practices, said Punjab Minister for Labour and Human Resources Raja Ashfaq Sarwar. Towards this end it has developed a tool kit for its inspectors to carry out work and gender responsive labour inspection that has won the UN Public Service Award.
Gender Unit Punjab stood first in the category of Gender Responsive Public Service Delivery among 2,000 global participants, he said. The award was conferred in Manama Bahrain by UN officials in June.
Decent work is productive work performed in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity to which women and men have equal access on equal terms, he explained. During the development of this inspection kit, it was found that women routinely face discrimination at work here.
An extensive exercise undertaken by the Punjab government revealed that women workers are particularly disadvantaged due to outdated workforce structures, workplace arrangements and attitudes. He said health policies for working women need to take into account their roles as housewives, mothers and workers. Women qualify for certain benefits during pregnancy, particularly if their job involves exposure to hazardous chemicals, he added.
Punjab Secretary Labor Capt (Retd) Muhammad Yusuf said that the concept of gender mainstreaming is being institutionalised. In the informal economy, the contributions of women workers are invisible as the economy is not documented and because much of their productive work is not remunerated.
