Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, in a bid to curb dengue virus, has directed the health secretary to negotiate for the import of urgently needed medicines from India.
The direction came in response to a Health Department proposal which said urgently needed medicines were available in France and India. As it would take several months for the import of the medicines from France, they could be imported from India, the proposal said and pointed out some problems in this regard.
The CM directed the Health secretary to negotiate for the import of medicines from India and, in case of any difficulty in this regard, he would play his role. He said that the special helpline for providing information to dengue patients and general public would start functioning from Saturday.
The 50-line helpline would operate round the clock and 150 doctors and lady doctors would work in three shifts on the helpline.
He was addressing a meeting of the special emergency committee set up for controlling dengue virus, here on Friday. Senator Pervaiz Rashid, Members National and Provincial Assemblies, the secretaries of Health and Education, the commissioner and the district coordination officer, Lahore, experts, senior doctors, representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO) and officers concerned were also present.
Shahbaz Sharif ordered measures on emergent basis for making up the shortage of medicines and equipment against dengue virus, issuing directions to make immediate arrangements for their import from anywhere in the world.
He said that all possible measures were being taken for protecting the people from dengue virus and special emergency town committees comprising elected representatives were also working round the clock for the purpose. He said the campaign against dengue virus should be further accelerated and, in case of shortage of quality medicines and equipment in the country, planning should be made for their immediate import by air. He said that, though billions of rupees were spent in the past on the import of granite from abroad for decoration of hospitals, no attention was paid to the purchase of quality medicines and machinery.
He also issued orders to set up a special cell for the import of medicines and equipment from abroad. He said that all segments of the society should be mobilized against dengue virus and special committees of students formed for paying door to door visits for promoting public awareness regarding preventive measures against dengue virus. He said that arrangements should also be made in all dispensaries of Lahore and Social Security Hospitals for curbing dengue virus.
Taking strict notice of the non-availability of medical facilities for dengue patients in Sheikh Zayed Hospital, the CM directed the Health secretary to contact the hospital administration and ensure treatment facilities for dengue patients in the hospital. He directed the Lahore DCO to take action against the elements involved in the price-hike of mosquito repellants and ensure spray in hotels, clubs and other public places at any cost.
He directed that stern action be taken against those not implementing the instructions. He also asked the health secretary to contact owners of private laboratories for providing diagnostic facility to dengue patients at reasonable charges. He also ordered the appointment of hard working officers of the Department in town committees and immediate transfer of negligent officers.
Appreciating the efforts of elected representatives in the campaign against dengue virus, he said that nothing could be more important than service to the ailing humanity. He asked elected representatives to stand by the people in this difficult time and constantly monitor the measures for controlling dengue virus in their respective areas as well as undertake visits to hospitals.
He directed provincial minister Ch. Abdul Ghafoor to immediately visit Kasur, Okara and Sheikhupura to review arrangements for providing medical facilities to dengue patients in the hospitals. He said that the campaign for promoting awareness in the general public about protective measures against dengue virus was in progress. In addition to holding of seminars and discussions, pamphlets were also being distributed among the people, he said and added that spray in houses was of vital importance for controlling dengue virus and town committees should evolve a plan in this regard and ensure its proper monitoring.
Earlier, the chairmen of town committees gave detailed briefings on the steps taken in their respective areas for the elimination of dengue virus. The Health secretary informed the meeting that 2,074 cases of dengue virus had been reported from the province, out of which 1,992 related to Lahore. He said that, besides emergency, patients of dengue virus were also being examined in outdoor wards of hospitals, giving the patients a sense of relief.
Lahore DOC Ahad Cheema informed the meeting about the measures taken against dengue virus.
