ISLAMABAD - Cotton Crop Assessment Committee (CCAC) here on Wednesday was informed that Punjab province has achieved 96 per cent of crop sowing targets and Sindh 88 per cent of targets set for the year 2013-14.
The first meeting of CCAC was held with Federal Secretary, Textile Industry Division, Ms. Rukhsana Shah in the chair to ases the volume of current cotton crop in the country, said Cotton Commissioner in Ministry of Textile industry, Dr Khalid Abullah.
Talking to APP, he said that representatives of provincial governments, Plant Protection Department, Trading Cooperation of Pakistan (TCP), Cotton Growers, All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA), Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) and Pakistan CenralCotton Committee (PCCC) attended the meeting.
Dr Abdullah said that in Punjab cotton crop has been cultivated over 5.766 million acres of land against the set targets of 6.00 million acres during the current sowing season which makes 96 per cent of cotton sowing targets.
Meanwhile, in Sindh the cotton plantation touched 1.40 million acres as against the set sowing targets of 1.60 million acres for the period under review which is 88 per cent of the set targeted area, he added. Cotton Commissioner further informed that based on the current situation in which sowing has been below the targets crop out put is expected to remain 13.225 million bales.
He said that it is expected that 9.60 million cotton bales of 170 kg each bale would be produced in Punjab where as Sindh is likely to produce 3.54 million cotton bales, he remarked. If the other condition remained same, about 0.108 million bales output is expected from Balochistan and 0.007 million bales expected to be produced in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa, he added.
Cotton Commissioner termed low availability of irrigation water during sowing season, seed quality issues, climate change, new pests and diseases have resulted in below average cotton sowing.
On the occasion, Federal Secretary Textile Industry Division emphasized on the availability of quality cotton seed which ensures production.
She highlighted the importance of clean cotton and implementation of quality standards and standard bale weight in the national interest.
The cotton crop size may be assessed on the basis of sowing data provided by provincial governments and the area not cultivated must be reflected in the revised estimates, she added.
