PTM calls off Eid protest, vows to avoid using anti-army slogans in gatherings

Following a "successful" meeting with tribal elders in Peshawar, leaders of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) announced on Tuesday that they would no longer be holding a protest on the third day of Eid in Razmak, North Waziristan.

The announcement came after PTM leaders received assurances that their arrested workers would be released ahead of Eid.

The modest breakthrough was achieved in a jirga held in the courtyard of former lawmaker Shah Jee Gul Afridi in Hayatabad.

The arbitration was attended by several prominent leaders, including Fata Grand Alliance Chief Patron Malik Khan Marjan, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader Ajmal Khan Wazir, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Farman and senior PTM leader Mohsin Dawar.

Ali Wazir, the central leader of the PTM, was unable to attend the meeting in person due to engagements in Dera Ismail Khan, but remained in telephonic contact throughout.

Talking to media persons after the conclusion of talks, Dawar said that the movement had earlier decided to hold a demonstration to demand the release of PTM activists arrested in Islamabad, Wana, Mir Ali, etc, but has now called it off after being promised that their workers will be released.

Manzoor Pashteen, the youth spearheading the PTM, termed the talks "successful" and told Dawn that it had been agreed that all arrested workers would be released before Eid.

Marjan said that PTM had also provided firm assurances that they will cease and desist from using anti-army slogans in their protests and gatherings.

A new round of talks will be held on June 22 between the tribal elders and PTM to discuss further concerns, it was announced.

It is a Jirga decision lets walk with it. The anti-Pakistan elements will not be happy with this and this will shatter some dreams of those pushing PTM against Pakistan but to me this news is more related to recent events in Afghanistan.

I'm fine with the Jirga decision, but certainly more than skeptical of whether the PTM will actually follow through with its commitment to not attack the Fauj and Pakistani State on social media and elsewhere.

Talking to PTM supporters is like banging your head on the wall. They're expecting miracles in an instant and absolutely REFUSE to acknowledge ANY progress on issues like checkposts, political rights, demining etc.

Tell them about the checkpost being removed, that the TTP is largely on the run and development is taking place and they just throw back canards like 'who created TTP in the first place?'

If I remember correctly, it was Pakistanis and the Pakistani media that was against the Fauj conducting operations against our 'Tribal brothers' and the Fauj was even criticized for the Lal Masjid Operation, so the responsibility for the rise of the TTP lies with all Pakistanis.

Demining itself will take years, especially in the absence of any government funding to raise additional BD Squads locally across the districts that were formerly FATA.

PTM are traitors there is no doubt in it but some times you have to try a different approach.

Well there are few things to understand from this talks.

1. PTM accepted they were posting against army because they agreed to not do this any more so they have taken the blame so they have violated law.

2. PTM is being identified on the whole and these talks will provide time to understand who actually backs them

3. This will reduce the media wide attention of PTM as they have agreed on not to go against army and this reduces the masala which media needs.

one thing not mentioned in this news but jirga agreed that PTM is being funded by foreign funds as being said on TV.

Here the question arises, what is fifth generation warfare and how it is different from conventional modus operandi of war and why it is resorted to. To answer these, we first of all are supposed to understand the previous concepts of war like first, second, third and fourth generations of warfare.

First generation warfare depended on manpower: the largest number of muscular men fighting physically.

Second generation war depended on artillery and superior firepower, epitomised by World War-I.

World War-II marked third generation warfare characterised by synchronised air, sea and ground operations.

The evolved form of insurgency warfare witnessed during the Chinese revolution and later in Vietnam and Afghanistan has been termed as a fourth generation warfare. Further, this kind of war is waged by non-state actors and asymmetric warriors employing terrorism as a tool to achieve their political objectives.

Fifth generation warfare is a latest phenomenon that is entirely different from all other previously practiced forms of war. The tactics and paraphernalia of this type of war are modern as well as deadly. It begins as a psychological warfare and at a final stage snowballs into a full-scale physical war. It is triggered when it becomes impossible for a country to balkanise the opponent country through direct use of force.

Therefore, the technique of propaganda warfare is employed to spread anarchy, chaos and desperation. Resultantly, the unity of the nation is absolutely shattered and the people are divided into different small factions and thereby establish parallel governments; writ of the state no longer exists and the law of the land is breached with impunity.

To achieve these objectives, the people are divided on sectarian, ethnic and linguistic lines. They are pitched against their own security institutions. This very situation ultimately culminates into civil war. Furthermore, mistrust and antipathy against the army of the country is excessively fostered. Consequently, army that serves as lifeblood for any country gets no public support to perpetuate their operations against the enemies of the country. In the aftermath, the country’s invincibility is severely damaged — this is what the internal manoeuvre employed by the foe country to advance her villainous plot to eviscerate the victim country internally.

Externally, the conspiracy is hatched to isolate the country in the comity of nations. Notably, social media is the key weapon in this war to be exploited by the enemies to spread disinformation and revulsion against the victim country. Subsequently, the county is divested of any international succour. Under this situation, the enemy forces march ahead to establish their hegemony over the vanquished country.

Moreover, poverty, economic deprivation and political injustices also breed fifth generation warriors. According to a US army major Shannon Beebe, this kind of warfare would be motivated by frustration than any other material or ideological objective. Therefore, the frustration of the local people caused by political, social and economic deprivation is excessively exploited by the enemies to further their Machiavellian agenda.
