The ruling party has linking critical coverage by the press to potential “treason” in its latest broadside against the country's beleaguered media.

The official account of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) fired off over two dozen tweets in English and Urdu late Tuesday, lambasting the press for criticism, saying it can be deemed “Anti-State”.

“Freedom of Expression is beauty of Democracy. Expressing Enemy's Stance is Not Freedom of speech but treason against its people,” read one tweet.

“Media houses & journalists must take care that in their quest for criticism on State, they intentionally or unintentionally do not end up propagating enemy's stance,” read another, with the hashtag JournalismNotAgenda.

Pakistan routinely ranks among the world's most dangerous countries for media workers, and reporters have frequently been detained, beaten and even killed for being critical of the government or military.

In recent years, the space for dissent has shrunk further, with the government announcing a crackdown on social networks and traditional media houses decrying pressure from authorities that they say has resulted in widespread self-censorship.

Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders recently warned of “disturbing dictatorial tendencies” after three Pakistani TV stations were briefly taken off air in what it called “brazen censorship”.

The Committee to Protect Journalists last year warned that the military had “quietly, but effectively, set restrictions on reporting”.

The government has defended its record, and last week Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi told a media freedom conference in London that there was “no question of gagging” journalists after being challenged on his country's record.

Among other tweets, the PTI also warned that the media was a “powerful tool of depicting the positive image of our country. Anti-State actions not only impact the credibility of our journalism community but also sends out a wrong message to the world”.

#MirFasad going to release another video on YouTube

#LifafaJurnos going to protest... #MarasiMedia gonna cry #AzadiKoHatra

And GoP is going to backdown?!!!!

#MarasiMedia #KhooniLiberals and #LifafaJurnos are a National Security Threat ...

PakState needs to act and establish Writ of the State... ACT according to the Law and arrest the culprits...

An Honest, Free and Fair media is a Must for Pakistan to progress...

This warning was much awaited. Anti-state is the right reason to crack down as no other civilised country allows this kind of freedom to their media houses.

When local media start saying what the enemy says, they should be muted with full constitutional enforcement.

Fake news. Media has been bashing PTI government from the day it won elections.

Labeling this PTI tweet "fake news" (and therefore ignoring it) may actually be a constructive approach, assuming it's just a scare tactic and they don't really mean it.

It is fake news. Norway is the most free country on the planet. And even here mainstream media cannot bash state institutions.

When government stop paying media, then these same media start gov bashing campaign. Then gov has to stop those unethical media who then cry gov attackson freedom speech.

It shows how these media have been and still are honest and deserve freedom of speech.

I don’t call it freedom of speech.

And Pakistan known as among the most dangerous countries ? Remember it didn’t started under PTI gov, but well before PTI came in power.

Who killed so much journalists in Pakistan ? PPP, PMLN, MQM, iextremists religious parties ? Who ? Should ask this question to the media ! The Pakistanis media !

There must be regulation on media. Nothing is free. The type of propaganda Pakistani media does against state and army is quite concerning. They sell enemy's agenda and narrative.

More recently, media has been so active in interviewing politicians under custody. How is that freedom of speech? Also a man arrested in narcotics case is being hailed as someone as persecuted. As if he is fighting state sponsored repression.

There must a framework and only under that reporting can be done. Try doing things that Pakistani media does in any Western country. Freedom is never unlimited.

Crticism is not treason if it is in positive manner.pti should avoid becoming firon of today otherwise they will face similar conditions like nawaz and zardari are facing.Even musharaf is better than pti and much democratic than them as he use to hear criticism infront of him and allowed people to criticize govt.Pakistan state and pti are different things and Pakistan is not public property of pti so criticizing political part has nothing to do with security of Pakistan

Journalists should not sell their souls to the enemies of Pakistan to promote their agendas and to degrade Pakistan’s reputation abroad.

These traitors need to face serious action, the situation is out of hand.

.
Kutay ke bachay journalists giving a bad name to Pakistan just for their ulterior motives. There is zero censorship in Pakistan but they are making a mountain out of a molehill just because they are not getting lifafas anymore.
