ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has opposed the government’s decision to allow former chief of army staff (COAS) retd Gen Raheel Sharif to assume the command of a yet-to-be-formed, Saudi-led 39-nation military alliance of Muslim states.

“We strongly oppose this decision and will soon raise the issue in the parliament,” PTI spokesman Fawwad Chaudhry told Dawn.

He said PTI Chairman Imran Khan had tasked three parliamentarians of the party — Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Shireen Mazari and Shafqat Mehmood — with preparing a strategy under which a privilege motion and a calling attention notice would be moved in the National Assembly so that a threadbare discussion could take place there on the issue.

The PTI’s reaction came after an interview of Defence Minister Khawaja Asif was published in some newspapers on Sunday in which he revealed that the government had issued issue a no objection certificate (NOC) to the former army chief to lead the military alliance.

The PTI spokesman said his party was of the view that all parliamentary parties had decided in the parliament that Pakistan would remain neutral in the Middle East crisis. But the decision to issue the NOC to Gen Sharif is contrary to the parliament’s decision. “Even if the government had decided to issue the NOC to the former army chief, it should have come again to the parliament to give reasons why it wanted to do so,” he said.

The PTI spokesman said the 39-nation military alliance of Muslim states was apparently being formed against Iran and, therefore, the appointment of Pakistan’s former army chief as its commander would send a negative message that the country was also against Iran.

Mr Chaudhry said the government’s decision could further expand the already existing divide between Sunni and Shia communities in Pakistan. “Our Shia brothers have already been targeted in the country and this decision will intensify sense of insecurity prevailing among them,” he added.

The proposed military coalition has reportedly been envisaged to serve as a platform for security cooperation, including provision of training, equipment and troops.

The PTI spokesman said the Middle East crisis was not confined to the Muslim states but super power Russia and Turkey had also been involved in the bloody war in Syria. “Raheel Sharif’s actions can also affect Pakistan’s relations with Iran, Russia and Turkey,” he expressed the fear.

He said under the country’s laws it was mandatory for all government officials not to take up a new job until two years after their retirement. And therefore Defence Minister Asif had told the Senate on Jan 11 that retd Gen Sharif would be required to seek NOC from the government before accepting the Saudi offer to assume command of the military coalition.

Mr Chaudhry said a statement of Federal Minister for Safron retired Lt Gen Abdul Qadir Baloch against issuance of the NOC to retd Gen Sharif was evident of the fact that the government had not taken even its cabinet members in confidence on the decision. “Neither the parliament nor the cabinet has been taken into confidence,” he said.

i dont agree with this,i dont like iran and they certainly hate us

The reason why PTI's popularity has taken a nose dive is because of reason such as this. It's because of their lack of political sense that rather than using their brains to present a political point of view, their strategy is to simply oppose everything and anything that the government in power says yes to. And if it doesn't work out then take a u turn. The things is that these kind of political manuevers would've been successful in harnessing public support in the 90s or even early 2000's but today people are extremely politically aware and smart thanks to the media. Imagine how a party with such unstable narratives would run our country. I feel it would br worse than pml and ppp not because of imran khan but because of the people in his ranks. To be honest it's sad because I for one actually thought Imran was far sighted and held some promise in turning the fortunes of our country around.

This is what damages the Nation's interests, the in-competencies of our leaders. I do not want to get into the detail of it, some of you will get my point quite smartly. Do they even understand the concept of the Strategic Multilateral Foreign Policy Decisions? Perhaps they do not, otherwise they shouldn't be opposing it this bluntly.

If this coalition doesn't include Iran than I will say that the PTI opposition is legit. And that we do not have to look after just only the Saudi Arabia's interests. If this coalition is what it says is; than the Saudi King will have to visit Tehran completely trusting in Iran's Security dedicated for him (without taking his 800 Security officers and several thousand equipment) just to create an example for Iranians and rest of the Muslim Nations that they are honest in what they are doing for the Muslim Nations. He will have to set aside his ego, personal conflicts with Iran, Historic troubles between the two and several other unnecessary concerns that Saudi Arabian Government has. And he will solely think about the future of Muslim Country, their betterment economically, Socially, Religiously and Militarily.

Well Pakistan should indulge in this if it brings benefits to Pakistan and the common people of country with or without Iran ..

Again mate, haven't you read what I have just said earlier, or perhaps you are thinking that I am a Shia that's why I am showing an extra gratitude towards Iran? Now you all see that whats wrong with us being a Muslim? We are never united, we have our own personal interests and we forget to know that this coalition is not for the benefits of one sole Country or a Nation but it is for the entire Muslim Nations and included those who are our allays. (Again I do not want to mention the names of those Countries but once if successfully this Coalitions forms you all will know the name of those Countries).
Open up your arms, change your attitudes and forgive your previous quarrels. Because those quarrels were orchestrated by the enemies of Islam, history is evident of that, but do we learn from our History? Off-course not, we are all superior in our own terms and conditions. And that's why we never use the term of Muslim when we introduce ourselves, instead, we use, Shafi, hanafi, Shia, Syed and many others.

Having a loyal patriotic pakistani heading and influencing saudi royals and military has its own benefits....

PTI just opposes every thing govt does...
If there was a war with india... and pmln happens to b on pak side pti will support india... (vice versa is also true)
