PTI ‘decides’ to disband Ruet-i-Hilal committees at all levels

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf led federal government has reportedly decided to disband the Ruet-i-Hilal committees at all levels and entrust the task of moon sighting to the Meteorological Department.

Reports in local media suggest the decision was made in the wake of repeated nuisance following the controversial decisions of moon sightings by the committees in the past, which cost millions to the national exchequer.

The decision will also help to end the confusion on the sighting of the moon for when the month would start and end, according to reports.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), which is well-equipped to predict moon birth in advance based on scientific calculations, is to be tasked with the job, the reports added.

It is a popular belief that in any Islamic state, the right of announcement for moon sighting for Eid and Ramazan is the authority of the state.

Meanwhile on Sunday, Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee chairman Mufti Muneeb ur Rehman announced that the crescent of Jamadi-ul-Awal has not been sighted and the 1st Jamadi-ul-Awal 1440 Hijri will be on Tuesday.

He announced this after chairing the meeting of Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee in Karachi today

I take it as positive step but consultation with Ulema should also be taken into consideration. Scientific evidence is not enough as you also need eye witnesses to declare Eid etc

We do not want to see further division for such matters as many people would like to see eye witnesses before accepting the decision of PMD

see? this is what is wrong with our people! we need to realize SIMPLE COMMON SENSE! If radars and all sorts of detection equipment are TELLING you that yes, the new moon IS their at the x, y and z location in the sky, then WHY on EARTH do the "ulemas" (a term used VERY loosely these days unfortunately) need to be consulted at ALL? It is simple math and science! I mean what's next? We need to consult with ulemas on if 2 + 2 = 4 or not? What if by a fluke of a chance, Pakistan is fully covered in a layer of thick clouds one day and an observatory in saudi Arabia or iran observes the new moon, wha, we aren't gonna have an eid because no "ulema" saw the moon in our nek-a-the-woods owing to thick clouds? Come on man...

It would only lead to more chaos. This will make local Mullah specially in KPK and Baluchistan much more powerful

sighting of moon is??? gettin' friggin' sick n tired of people saying "if you have no clue then refrain" and yet, they offer NO ounce of knowledge or info in return. Please dispute with me what was wrong with what I said in my post but on substance and evidence. the elephant in the room that people choose to ignore is that there is an ill-conceived notion that "mullahs" somehow have authority of any sort when they do NOT! they are private citizens and need to learn to BE just private citizens...no authority to them none what so ever.

Why is that?
When in the month of Ramazan people do sehri and iftar on the time provided by the same Met department but when it comes to Eid they need a witness.
In the past all the prayer timings were also determined by seeing the position of the sun and hence a local Imam would announce the correct time of Sehri or Iftar.
When we have moved on from that why cant we adopt this as well.

No amount of consultation would lead to anything, if their is a dialog their will be more division and no solution. Government should take this decision and stick with it.

In Islam moon has to be sighted from the eye if you don't right the moon their is no Ramdan or Eid ALLAH created your moon so please knows better about issue of birth of moon still eye sighting is mandatory
