Protests flared in parts of Indian-occupied Kashmir on Tuesday after police said a man being questioned in connection with a security investigation had died in custody, the latest disturbance in one of the world's most militarised regions.

The 28-year-old man, Rizwan Asad, died in police custody late on Monday, his family confirmed on Tuesday. The young teacher was a chemistry graduate who taught at a private school, his family said.

Protesters threw stones at police in several parts of the region following news of the man's death, with shops shutting in parts of the main city of Srinagar. Police responded with tear gas.

The government also shut down the Islamic University in Awantipora where Asad was a guest lecturer.

Rizwan, an Awantipora resident in the Pulwama district, south Kashmir, was reportedly arrested last week by the National Investigative Agency of India as part of a crackdown on socio-political and religious organisation Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Kashmir, which was banned in February.

He had been arrested as part of a “terror case investigation”, a police spokesman said. Inquiries were being carried out into the cause of his death, the spokesman added.

“This morning we came to know that my brother has been killed,” Rizwan’s brother, Zulkarnain Asad, told media after reports of custodial death emerged.

“My brother has been killed in police custody in cold blood,” he said.

Zulkarnain was sceptical that any investigation would reveal the truth.

“We want an investigation of it but we know nothing is going to happen,” the brother told Reuters.

“We've all seen investigations for the last 20 years.”

Asad and his father were both associated with the Jamaat-i-Islami, Zulkarnain said. "It [being associated with Jamaat-i-Islami] is not a crime."

Since his arrest, Asad had been kept at the dreaded anti-insurgency Special Operations Group (SOG) headquarter of the police, called Cargo, in Srinagar.

Police officials also confirmed Asad’s death, however, they were reluctant to comment on how he died in custody.

“We have requested for magisterial inquiry under 176 CrPc (Criminal Procedure Code) to initiate a thorough probe to ascertain the actual cause of death," SP Pani, inspector general of police in Kashmir, told local media.

Police have not yet filed a murder case into the teacher's death.

Last year, Asad was imprisoned under the Public Safety Act, which allows any person to be imprisoned for up to two years without a trial. The court, however, ordered him to be set free.

“After his release, he had again resumed his life. He was teaching, doing his own things, he was not part of any militant outfit. He was completely innocent,” Zulkarnain said.

“There have been several thousand custodial killings and custodial disappearances by Indian forces in Kashmir. None of them have received any justice; it is because of the complete lack of accountability and total lawlessness that Rizwan could be killed in custody last night,” Khurram Parvez, a top Kashmiri human rights activist, told Anadolu Agency.

Several prominent political figures in Kashmir condemned the death of the man.

“Punishment must be handed out to the killers of this young man,” said Omar Abdullah, a former chief minister of the state, on Twitter.

Former chief minister of occupied Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti also delivered a strongly worded rebuke on the short-messaging platform:

"Innocent men hauled up from their homes for interrogation return home only in coffins now. GoI’s repressive approach leaves young educated men vulnerable who are forced to take up arms. Stop using Kashmir to exhibit your sick chauvinistic nationalism. We have suffered enough," she tweeted.

Incoming Sangi bullshit in 3, 2, 1,

Hey I'll beat them to the punch;

"He was a stone pelter what do you expect when every second you throw stones through and outside your classroom window when the security services pass by".

I'm hoping for an investigation and arrests.

All great but I'm expecting millions to flock to this cause, the only problem is I've been waiting 29 years....o_O
Don't bet on it. Palestine is the cause that stirs most Pakistani's and I think you will have witnessed this first hand in UK. Kashmir is not even on the radar. More Rizwan Asad's can continue to be killed. But to be taken note of you need to die at hands of a Israeli soldier. Then see what happens.

American Pakistanis go to Arab Masjids, learn from Arab imams, surrounded by Arab political activists. They are no longer Pakistanis but Arabs. Many have even lost their language and identity.

However, British Pakistanis are still better. The Mirpuris have strong links back home.

Death to 7 lakh Indian occupier terrorists.

Shame on those Pakistanis who sing the mantra of peace with Indian occupier terrorists. This is how they reward you.

. . .
I can relate with that. But why. Why 'o' why?

They view their background as a stigma and an obstacle in their desire to fit in with White Americans, Blacks, or Arabs.

Self-hating Pakistanis.

If you mention Pakistan, you will see the tension and stress on their face, profuse sweating and furrowed brows.

Don’t mention Kashmir lest their Indian and Arab humsayo disapprove.
