Protests against anti-Islam film at US Consulate in Kolkata

Kolkata: Hundreds of Muslims marched towards the American Centre in Kolkata today to protest against an anti-Islam video and to demand that the US authorities apologise for it.

The protesters, belonging to Muslim organisations, including the All-Bengal Minorities Youth Federation, broke barricades and tried to approach the highly-fortified American Centre on Chowringee, but were stopped some distance away, police sources said.

The protest grid-locked traffic bumper-to-bumper on Chowringhee and CR avenue in central Kolkata and had a ripple effect elsewhere, including the south and the north in the metropolis.

Rally against ‘offensive film’ turns violent in Kolkata
Kolkata, Sept 27, 2012, DHNS:

Life came to a sudden halt after an anti-US rally called in by Muslim groups in Kolkata on Thursday against the 'anti-Islam' film 'Innocence of Muslims' turned violent.

The incident happened on Thursday afternoon when thousands of protesters, belonging to various Muslim organisations, including the All-Bengal Minorities Youth Federation, blocked the road, broke barricades and tried to enter the American Centre but were stopped some distance away by the police.

Police, however, managed to pacify the crowd and bring them under control, thus preventing any untoward incident, sources said.

“There was a demonstration in front of the American Centre in Kolkata and suddenly the demonstrators turned violent and tried to break the barricade and enter into the centre. We resisted them and persuaded them to conduct their rally peacefully,” a senior Kolkata police officer said.

“We were successful in persuading the demonstrators and there was no untoward incident. No one was injured in the incident,” the officer added.

“Traffic movement in the city faced a serious problem because the road in front of the American Centre is one of the main roads in the city. We had to divert the traffic causing serious jam throughout the city. But now the traffic movement has become normal,” the officer said.

The film, 'Innocence of Muslims', by US director Sam Bacile, has led to violent protests worldwide, including demonstrations in Chennai and Jammu and Kashmir in India.

Muslim groups in India have called for a ban on the film, with one such group filing a PIL in the Bombay High Court.

The Kashmir Valley was rocked by protests a week ago as demonstrators led by Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik took to the streets, leading to clashes with the police.

The film triggered off violent clashes in Libya where the US ambassador was killed in an attack on the US embassy in Benghazi.

if immigration authorities did a quick check at that rally , how many would be Bangladeshi Muslims in that crowd :) I suspect the crowd size would diminish by 2/3 . the word peaceful gathering/protest does not seem to be in their repertoire

Why not late lalitas, why does it always have to be males species in such matters.
I've reasons to believe that these protests in chennai and kolkata are not genuine protests but the politically staged ones with the active support of parties ruling these west bengal and tamilnadu.Since when manmohan singh has announced FDI in retail mamta banarjee has been drifting apart from UPA with her opposition to FDI.Last year also MMS had to rollback FDI decision due to protests from Mamta. Seems that UPA was unable to persuade her and there usa was pressurizing GOI to open up FDI in retail for long.My take is that UPA sent USA ambassador to India Nancy Powell to kolkata to persuade Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on FDI issue on 24th of sept. Now Mamta being egoist politician didnt like this indirect approach of usa and UPA so she first withdrew support from UPA and then instigated these late protests against usa in kolkata.

Of all the places in india one can rarely see protests by muslims in chennai and kolkata.Infact i was expecting protests in delhi and mumbai and hyderabad on "innocence of muslim" film issue.

As for cennahi protests refer back to chennai protest thread.

Infact i do fear that USA consulates in both chennai and kolkata dont start profiling US visa seekers having muslim names in india.

It may be wrong politically but they can as it is their country these people are going to.

I find Kolkata people more educated and mature than the rest of India. Emotional at times, yet I find it difficult to believe that they would be politically manipulated in this manner.

Education is not the guarantor to behavioral maturity. You should know that everyone when it comes to nation and culture is emotional.
