PESHAWAR: A displaced man was killed and six others were injured when troops opened fire at protesters in Bakakhel Camp in the Bannu Frontier Region on Sunday.

A police official at Bannu District Headquarters Hospital told Dawn that the body of 22-year-old Rahmatullah as well as the injured protesters had been brought to the emergency ward.

Officials said clashes broke out after the internally displaced persons (IDPs) from North Waziristan protested against lack of drinking water and other facilities at the camp and restriction imposed by the management on their movement outside the camp.

The protest started when they were not allowed to go outside the camp and troops opened fire to disperse the protesters.

An official said in the night the incident had taken place before Iftar and situation was under control.

A large number of displaced people are residing in rented houses, but troops are managing the camp adjoining North Waziristan where around 3,500 families have been accommodated.

Over one million people were displaced from North Waziristan when military launched operation Zarb-i-Azb in June last.

The military’s public relations wing, ISPR, claimed recently that 90 per cent area of North Waziristan tribal region had been cleared of militants.

Agreed . Any killing of people who are genuinely demanding something shall have negative impact. Administration should be careful.
Exactly. And its Ramadan, these people will be fasting in extreme heat. At least they should understand the plight of these people rather than opening fire on them for demanding a basic necessity.

.
They should not have fired on them but rather should have used non-lethal force.
When army is deployed my friend they don't have non-lethal force.... they are not police. 2ndly there is a chance that there are terrorist hiding in those IDP camps... so imagine the state of mind of a Person standing on guard there. He would definitely be trigger happy for his survival

@Horus @syedali73 Our own peoples who took Arms on first day of independence to liberate Kashmir are not allowed to go into there own country but filthy Afghan's who are still thankless to Pakistan and burn our flags are free to roam and loot in whole country. They are free to co-operate with any anti-Pakistan element and above all Afghan's have brought misery to us.They should go back enough of one sided love and brotherhood......

.
Thats Horrible Stuff from the Army .. That'd help gain sympathies for the Talibans among the IDP's .

.
Diyat must be offered as per islamic law.
Due appologies must be offered as well.
This should have been avoided

On the issue of going out of the camp, when others who are residing with their relatives and rented house can go outside on will then why would those in this particular camp be prevented from moving out? As a matter of fact being close to that area i have the first hand info of this thing as IDPs are even entitled to go to CMH Bannu for treatment and we see IDPs there regularly. And regarding Diyat issue then Political administration along with Military officials have met with Jirga of the tribesmen and decided that 5 lacs would be paid to the killed and around 1 lac plus to injured ones. Troops only fire when attacked and do U believe our media would tell U the reality ever?
