Yes and the protests against this are coming from Chinese people themselves.. Every society has sections that hold on to archaic brutal inhuman practices in the name of culture, But wider humanity needs to see to end of those.. From Japanese and Danish customs of massacring Dolphins and Whales to whats happening in Arabic countries and else where.. Humans need to evolve

One might as well stop eating meat and go Vegan because these cruel practices exist in every country which eats meat.

As a vegi, I am against any animals being killed for food. So at a fundamental level, this is no different than eating any other animal; culture shock I suppose.

But just stealing them and torturing them seems to be a bit much, anyway, if the government is fine, its up to the people to get who don't like it to be changed, if that's possible in China.

Eating meat comes with with a cost.

To me, someone eating dog, cat, pig or cow doesnt really matter. Hopefully people will take time to reflect on the animal they eat and not waste food, especially if an animal died for meat.

I do know that In China, people eat meat much less often than in the west due to cost, style of eating etc.

In my parents time, it was only for rare occasions and festivals for a pig to be slaughtered.

To start off, the dog is more intelligent. The more intelligent the creature, the more versatile it is, the more emotional it is, and the more social it is. The most cattle have been to mankind, besides serving as a food source, is to help farming, whereas the dog have been and done much more, anything from hunter, to guard, and to companion. The dog is proactive in its relationship with man, whereas the cow is reactive. The dog seeks to please man, whereas the cow is just simply -- there.

People are not stupid. They are not going to fall for the simplistic argument that the dog is nothing more than the cow. If you value your relationship with another human being as exceptional from relationships to other creatures, then you know that there are gradations of values of relationships, and of those grades, the dog to man ranks the highest.

Dude!! Cow is eaten all over the world, even in India. Animals like Cow, goat, pig, chicken etc are for food. May be Dog is for food in some parts of China but why torture it before killing it? Also dog is man's best friend, most loyal. How can anyone be so cruel to them? Even in India north east especially in Nagaland they eat dogs, but they are not tortured as far as I am aware. And stop looking at everything from your biased perspective, even many Chinese protest this barbaric yulin festival. Dogs are not like Cows they have feelings more than cows, they like to socialize with humans, they have been our companion for ages. Dogs are like part of a family for some people. And when we see pics of Yulin, you loose your head.

Relationships are not entirely determined by intelligence, there are a multitude of parameters to determine partner suitability. Ever had a baby lamb follow you around? A small cow or pig? Each have their own attributes.

I do not care about common ancestry. My ancestors, even the immediate ones, are not me. They do not determine my courses in life. So why should I care about the evolutionary common ancestry of me and the cow ?

Do I ? No. But can I ? Yes, I have killed and dressed a deer, then cured the meat for the rest of the year. It is irrelevant if someone can kill for his/her own meat. Absolutely agree! The OP is right, it's unusual in most part of China including Shanghai, and most Chinese include myself are against this. Hope Yulin people also ban this ASAP.

I agree that Dog-eating is not common in most part of China including your city.. But it's also a fact that nearly 10-15 million dog are killed annually for consumption with Guangdong, Yunnan and Guangxi taking a lions share. Even though dog meat consumption is rapidly declining in rest of China but that's not the case in places like Guangxi. So i don't think they gonna stop eating it anytime soon.
