Pros and Cons of a 64 bit OS.

If you have 4 GB or more RAM, then 64-bit is better, and if you have less than 4 GB RAM, then 32-bit is better.

64-bit means it has 64 registers, and can address large amounts of memory. There isn't much benefit in moving to 64-bit, unless the software is optimized to utilize all 64 registers and huge amounts of memory.

The benefit would be 4-5 % improvement in running 64-bit software, and a penalty of 1-2% while running 32-bit software on 64-bit OS.

So your decision should be dependent on amount of RAM, not performance benefit.

I am having a mercury mother board with me and i want to upgrade so which is better Intel motherboard or Gigabyte?? I have heard that in India there are no Servicing centres for Intel motherboards and they have to be shipped to Singapore??

Is I3 really that great or can i go to a 2.9 GHZ c2d ?? i currently have a dual core 1.33 GHZ with 2 GB RAM. Almost 4 years old and just recently i got a problem with my Motherboard , the condensors or something got burnt on it, repaired and it is working fine again though.

Mercury isn't a manufacturer. It rebrands motherboards from other manufacturers. You shouldn't go for a Mercury ever.

Go for ASUS, MSI or Gigabyte. All three are good.

You can opt for C2D or i3. There isn't much of a performance difference, but I'd recommend a newer platform. So my recommendation is i3, so you can upgrade easily in future.

The problem you are mentioning is one of the capacitors blew. It is common with liquid capacitors that these cheap motherboards use. Look for solid capacitors on motherboards. All three manufacturers I listed provide solid capacitors only.
