With results from the 2011 world championships for the Summer Olympics' most high-profile sports — swimming and track and field — factored in, USA TODAY's virtual medals table has U.S. athletes winning more than half of the country's medals next summer in those sports.

The USA's strong showing at track and field worlds boosted the projected 2012 U.S. Olympic medals in that sport to 27 overall. The latest update of the Olympic Medal Tracker also has U.S. swimmers winning 27 medals next year in London, with the gold-medal haul in the pool (15) exceeding that in track and field (11).

The Medal Tracker, produced in partnership with Infostrada Sports, uses an algorithm to rank athletes in each Olympic event based on their recent results. It is a measure of best current performances rather than a reliable predictor of medal winners.

The formula didn't produce a clear favorite in the rivalry between U.S. swimmers Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, pegging each to win three of four individual events. The Medal Tracker has Phelps beating Lochte in the 200-meter freestyle and Lochte ahead of Phelps in the 200-meter individual medley. Lochte won both those events at worlds in July.

The battle for overall medal supremacy also will be close at the London Olympics, according to the Medal Tracker, which has the USA and China each winning 89 total medals and Russia contending with 83.

U.S. athletes have topped the medals table at the last four Summer Olympics, but China was the a runaway winner in the gold-medal count at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, leading the USA 51-36.

sports is a strong indicator of a country's overall strength.USSR and US used to dominate international sports, and China participated Olympic Games in 1932 and got nothing but humiliation.after that Olympic Games China was laughed at by the western powers and being called"sick man in Asia".and the nation carried that heavy nickname for several decades because of the poor performance in that Olympic Games.look back in the history people are amazed to see how things changed ,in 2008 China dominated world gold medals tally and became the top country in sports. What if those Chinese athletes representing China in 1932 Olympics could live to see this achievement of their country.

Eagerly waiting for it, they have especially spent alot on stadium.

Although I still remember the one hosted by China... :china:
