Well, they are new to the game. The Russians or whoever can fill the gap, but they will need to tag with a local partner now, creating India's MIC in the long run.

Initially, they will either get ToT from outside OEMs, OEMs will help them with the platform and production, testing plant - Example -

For Example - K9 Varja, Koreans the OEMs, L&T as the local partner. First private sector armor plant. Great method.

Example DRDO as the design agency producing basic design, two private sector vendors produced their variants on top of it, ATAGS. This is an increasingly popular method now, finally.


With both methods working together, eventually these guys wont need foreign OEMs or DRDO for non strategic programs they way their pace is going. Eventually they will produce their own IP, with no strings attached.

The private sector will change the face of Indian defence in the next 10-20 years. They already are. For example Bharat Forge bought out a whole artillery plant from Europe years ago forcing lazy OFB to dust off the blueprints to produce Dhanush.

The largest infrastructure, automotive, etc. companies in India are entering in defence and aero, they will use outside OEM methodologies, along with what they know from their own original industry to change Indian defence. Indian armed forces lethality and efficiency will greatly improve due to them. OFB has every right to fear.

Umair small correction they are not M109s of vietnam era but they are band new K9 Vajra Aka K9 Thunder which is a South Korean self-propelled 155 mm howitzer being assembled in L&T Plant JV between L&T and Samsung Techwin

You're not getting the point. Tanks, jet fighters, transports, artillery, etc. production facilities are/will be coming up too. Currently, Arjun Mark 2 is being designed in PPP model with Reliance Defence. And FRCV program will go the private firms as well, surely.

Pakistanis can keep expressing happiness and glee. The fact remains that privatisation is the way to go.

In the 80s and 90s Indian auto companies were almost non-existent, far behind the times and even further back in tech. I remember back then Pakistan used to have these great modern cars (compared to India), but even so Pakistan's 'superiority' was only built on importing cars, there was hardly a manufacturing base there either.

But then India opened out the sector to foreign players and enabled entry of local players, and made significant moves to encourage private sector. Today Indian auto companies have developed an incredible base of solid R&D, design and financial capabilities. They're even starting to go outside India.

What is Pakistan's domestic auto industry doing today?

Same thing will happen in defence in 2 decades. The fillip privatisation will give to Indian defence production will be like nothing else.

It is assemblying, but up 50% of it is sourced locally, it's not a bad start for it's first venture into the domain. These are some of India biggest companies we're talking about here, they managed well in automotive, infra, etc. They're doing a good initial start with defence.

Automotive sector did the same thing, they did the license production - now they have their own designs. I tried to explain that in that last two posts, they'll eventually want their own IP. You work your way up there.
