When Rebel winning the civil war, they will ask to join the Russian Federation, that is the reason why the rebel fight in the first place, unless you are saying the rebel can take Kiev and reinsert control of the whole ukraine rather than iust donbass, then well......I dont think its possible without an actual Russian invasion.

Kiev will remain out of rebel hand even when they win the civil war and Ukraine will join nato, and Russia will still have to face an actual border with NATO, the only different is they have 1 more region to buffer the NATO, which to be honest, wasnt much

Or Putin can reintegrate a more Independent Eastern Ukraine into Ukraine to increase his influence on Kiev so it does not join NATO,the Minsk peace deal has a provision for cross border cooperation with Russia.

And you can educate yourself at the topic.Do a simple web search and see how many and different kind of weapons Baltics has inherits from former USSR.Same goes for any other East European Country.Educate yourself of the matter what was the fate of all that equipment-plenty of information online.The same goes for Ukraine-in 1991 tens of thousands of heavy equipment were simple left behind according to agreements.Same tens of thousands were stolen and sold all over the world by current Kiev warlords.They even has sold USA weapons and already selling Saxons.

When Soviets left Baltics that time they took almost all the military equipment and even now these countries doesnt have tanks, fighter planes.

The rebel want 2 things Either fully independence or highly autonomous, both of which would mean they have to be unhook with the Ukrainian system.

Virtually if Rebel wins , one way or another that eastern Ukranian would be called ukrainian by name only. They would be excluded from Ukranian federal decision...

you cannot have highly self governance and voice for ukraine at the same time...

If you uave follow closely on my comment, what the rebel want is not exactly what the russian wanted. Or otherwise they would have annexed Eastern lart of Ukraine already.

Problem for Russia is, they are not set out to feed another 10 millions mouth while the Russian is holding on as it is. The influx of Eastern Ukrainian would in effect induce another "East German situation" to West Germany.

For Russia, they want the border like they are used to be, but for the Rebel, they wont accept nothing less than full independence. Thats is the problem for Russia right now.

And the war is going to drag on, you will see a seesaw pattern developing but the line will probably stay where they were.
