Within a span of two days, India demonstrated the reliability of another surface-to-surface missile by successfully test-firing nuclear-weapons capable Prithvi-II ballistic system for its full range of 350 km on Monday.

The nine-metre tall missile, built indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), was launched 9.00 hrs from Launch Complex-III of the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, Orissa by the personnel of Strategic Force Command as part of regular user trial.

The missile which was picked up randomly from the production lot met all the mission objectives and closed in onto the pre-designated target in the Bay of Bengal with a high degree of accuracy after a 500-second flight, according to DRDO officials. The Circular Error Probability was (CEP) was a few metres, they added.

A battery of sophisticated radars, electro-optical systems, telemetry stations and a ship located near the target point tracked the entire flight path until its splash down.

The liquid-propelled Prithvi-II is a single stage missile and equipped with sophisticated inertial navigation, control and guidance system. It can carry payload of 500-1,000 kg and has already been inducted into the Armed Forces.

The launch operations were carried out by SFC personnel and supervised by DRDO missile scientists.

Hypersonic Shourya missile was successfully test-fired on Saturday.

This missile looks very heavy.anyway test something new? That will open door for us to test something hidden...:smokin:

Within a span of two days, India demonstrated the reliability of another surface-to-surface missile, with the successful test-firing of Prithvi-II ballistic system to its full range of 350 km on Monday.

(Hypersonic missile Shourya was successfully test-fired from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur on the Orissa coast on Saturday.)

Prithvi-II, was launched at 9 a.m. from Launch Complex-III of the ITR, Balasore in Chandipur by personnel of the Strategic Force Command (SFC) as part of a regular training exercise. After a flight of 500 seconds, it closed in on the predefined target in the Bay of Bengal with a single-digit accuracy of less than 10 metres. The flight test met all the mission objectives and it was a text-book launch.

A battery of radars, electro-optical systems and telemetry stations located along the coast tracked the missile throughout its flight. A naval ship located near the target witnessed the splash down.

The missile was picked up randomly from the production lot and the launch was monitored by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) scientists.

Prithvi-II, first indigenously developed strategic missile by the DRDO, was inducted into the armed forces. It was flight-tested a number of times as part of regular user trials.

The single-stage, liquid-propelled missile is equipped with an advanced inertial navigation, control and guidance system and can carry a payload of 500-1,000 kg to a distance of 350 km.

Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister V. K. Saraswat congratulated scientists and other DRDO employees and the armed forces for the successful flight test, says a press release here.

whya re they still testing the prithvis when it should have been retired ?

otherwise we can give these missiles to friendly countries like viet nam etc....make minor modifications in the range tobring it under 300 and so no mtcr violations....

Why should it be retired?

It's a good, time proven missile which offers us everything we need against Pakistan (read short ranges) until the MRV's come calling.

I'm guessing it should be pretty cheap too. Maybe that's why they keep doing it.

Besides, regular testing is a great way to maintain the confidence of the forces in an weapon system that DRDO has provided them.

.
Though missile is heavy and old, it is only proven missile . What other option do we have rather than prithvi (now)?

What I meant is newer light weight road mobile SRMS with newer tech must be introduced.

i dont think prithvi is road mobile...

you got a valid point. But there is something called economy. Defense has limited budget, they have to manage there inventory in such manner that they have good quantity and quality at same time.

eg. Cost of on shourya is equal to cost of many PrithviII. So by having few shourya and many prithvi ,we can balance our requirement.

This tradeoff os not only managed by India, but by all countries. (like China still have more than 700 MiG21, USAF has many F16 and so on...)

the Prithvi missiles should not retired they are perfectly fine and will suited to India's deterrence needs they are valuable SRBM's that help our minimum credible deterrence factor

and to retire them now would be a waste of manufacturing time and money the oldest Prithvi 1 variants have long since been phased out by the newer variants and the Prahar missile may replace some of the oldest Prithvi missiles in service.

and technically India could sell Prithvi missile to Vietnam irregardless of the MTCR since India is not a signatory.

.
Prithvi normally comes under Scud family....

Scud was short down in Libya, Can Prithvi be short down with modern aircraft and air weapon.
Military was Testing the same.

The new test was with inertial guidance system. The missile has the ability to maneuver up to 15, extending its range and midcourse inertial guidance and a radar seeking warhead in the terminal phase.

The Indian Army transports and launches the missiles from Transporter-Erector-Launcher (TEL) vehicles, designed to transport the missile along roads and railways. Its short range and low payload prevent it from being used against most strategic targets. However, the missile's high accuracy enables it to target enemy military targets effectively, making it a battlefield weapon

of course , it can be moved via road but it can be detected easily . The launcher itself can be mounted on truck. But prahaar is more advanced in mobility as it is a quick reaction missile.
the current quick reaction missile is Brahmos.
