Saudi Princess Basma bint Saud has accused the Riyadh regime of corruption, saying a vast majority of the Persian Gulf country's population are living in poverty.

The princess, a niece of King Abdullah and a social activist and prominent supporter of women's rights in Saudi Arabia, has said that some 95 percent of the country live below the country's poverty-line and have no access to water and electricity.

This is while the remaining five percent enjoy the country's wealth.

She also accused Saudi officials of pocketing more than USD 21 billion that were supposed to be invested in order to expand the holy mosque in Mecca.

Mohammad al-Qahtani, the head of the Saudi Civil and political Rights Association, confirmed the allegations, saying that the country's princes possess all the power and wealth in Saudi Arabia.

Al-Qahtani further accused the regime of holding thousands of political prisoners without charging them.

Saudi Arabia has long been accused of having one of the world's most repressive regimes.

Several right groups and international bodies including the Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have frequently condemned the Saudi regime for their widespread violation of human rights.

Moreover, Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world to ban women, both Saudi and foreign nationals, from driving.

The state has no written ban on women driving, but Saudi law requires citizens to use a locally issued license while in the country. Such licenses are not issued for women, making it effectively illegal for them to drive.

Women are also barred from voting, except for chamber of commerce elections in two cities in recent years, while no woman can become a cabinet member.

Less than three months ago, the princess had called on Saudi rulers to be more open to change, stressing that no Arab country is immune to the wave of popular movements in the region.

The leaders are the problem in Saudi

i think it is a little bit hard to believe that 95% of population live under the poverty line.

The supposed 95% is a lie. I am Saudi and I live here and I know how things are going in my country. more than 85% of the country live in urban areas and all urban areas have access to electricity and water. How do I know?? I freaking live here.

And YES there is big corruption going on in Saudi Arabia and is very very bad that an entire ministry was created to battle it these princes only resorted to corruption because the national treasury is no longer open to them the same way it was in King Fahad era and because King Abdullah issued huge projects building entire cities and infrastructure it became their outlet to preserve their lavish life style through corruption.

And about women driving and voting they WILL drive and vote many Saudis are activists in such a thing including myself and believe everything is flowing in the right direction.

And this entire lost all credibility with the 95% thing to me. Superkaif may you please post the link of which news agency posted this article??

The Al-Saud family have their good and their bad. Throughout Saudi Arabia's history there was only one leader who was bad and a slave to the west thank god that man is dead now. does not mean all of Al-Saud are bad. ofcourse being such a large family of princes and princess is also bad but time will take care of that.

As I said we only had one bad leader who stayed in office for 25 years and totally "f*** up" Saudi Arabia. Now ever since his death we have been calling for a united gulf currency but so far Qatar and the UAE are apposing vehemently.

^^^^

Colored bolded part .. Is that a joke or what? 95% Saudi's citizen they're living below poverty line?
Publisher need to check is head. He badly need doctor .. I living in Saudi Arabia for past 11 years. A normal Saudi Living standard is better than middle class Indian and Pakistani.

Yep!! that's right there's corruption issues. After 2004 the ratio of corruption increase remarkably, especially in Government departments.Overall situation not as bad the above article is projecting.

Note: I never experienced Power cut or water shortage problem in past 11 years. It's a utter lie i must say ..

You are missing the point. You dont have create a new currency just stop accepting US dollar. Use your muscle

Im not suggesting it was illegal to have multiple divorces. You say its a bad practice but surely leaders should set an example
