I was reading a journal on south asian family patterns and came across a section on sexual intimacy amongst distant family members in India/Pakistan being on the rise. It was talking about how teenage girls in experimental stage are far more vulnerable to getting pregnant by a cousin or distant family member than a stranger, with girls getting sexual assaulted, raped, getting pregnat which go quite unreported, or even succumbing to consensual sex with a cousin.
Even though cousin marriages are prohibited in Hindu/Sikh religions, and considered a major taboo, however the article highlights that major shifts in culture changes are swiftly eroding those religious n cultural taboos. How true is that claim?
Are relationships between cousins more common now in Pak? I was thinking its probably in certain areas like khi, lhr, islmbd, etc liberal areas where cousins get to hang out together. and not in the conservative pashtun/tribal/sindhi areas where the concept of practicing pardah from non-mehrem cousins is still in effect and cousins dont usually hang out with each other.
In my entire family cousin marriages are almost frowned upon even though Islam allows them. I have never seen cousins dating etc. around in even my distant family circles. Having been away from Pak for almost a decade, have things changed there significantly?
