I was reading a journal on south asian family patterns and came across a section on sexual intimacy amongst distant family members in India/Pakistan being on the rise. It was talking about how teenage girls in experimental stage are far more vulnerable to getting pregnant by a cousin or distant family member than a stranger, with girls getting sexual assaulted, raped, getting pregnat which go quite unreported, or even succumbing to consensual sex with a cousin.

Even though cousin marriages are prohibited in Hindu/Sikh religions, and considered a major taboo, however the article highlights that major shifts in culture changes are swiftly eroding those religious n cultural taboos. How true is that claim?

Are relationships between cousins more common now in Pak? I was thinking its probably in certain areas like khi, lhr, islmbd, etc liberal areas where cousins get to hang out together. and not in the conservative pashtun/tribal/sindhi areas where the concept of practicing pardah from non-mehrem cousins is still in effect and cousins dont usually hang out with each other.

In my entire family cousin marriages are almost frowned upon even though Islam allows them. I have never seen cousins dating etc. around in even my distant family circles. Having been away from Pak for almost a decade, have things changed there significantly?

Marriage with cousins and sexual harassment of cousin are two different thing. You can marry with cousins dont give you this right to abuse them. Peoples should control their hormones and if they cannot then they should be blame. I did grow up close to all of my first cousins. We played together and were very friendly with each others but i never had any evil intention for my female cousins and in fact i protected them from others and fight with their parents for their rights. It may seem natural to be friendly with someone who is so familiar but that's because you share the same genes.

We sikhs look at our cousins as brothers and sisters i would be incest to us.I would not be able to marry someone from my village my mothers village and my maternal grandmothers village

ok I got your first point that you consider cousins like maternal brother and sisters but why not marry with someone who belong to your town?

I have problem with cousin marriage only If there is a genetic (inherited) disease running in a family then if two members of that family marry, there's a slightly increased risk of the child having that disease. If the next generation of the family inter-marries as well, then the risk gets higher. So eventually people may have noticed that children of these closely related couples were more likely to be sickly. But that happen because of repeated generations of the same family kept on inter-marrying, narrowing the gene pool over generations.

Its got something to do with gotra people from your own village have mostly got the same surname and from the same clan.Even if they not from your village and they have the same surname they cant get married

What journal is this? A link would be great.

As far as I know cousin marriage is a big no no in North India(Hindus, Sikhs). Let alone cousins, people with same Gotra(same male lineage) can't get married.

gotra" means "lineage"? :undecided:

I assumed peopels prefer to marry in same clan because of common beliefs, caste and culture..

In a patrilineal Hindu society (most common), the bride belongs to her father's gotra before the marriage, and to her husband's gotra after the marriage The groom on the other hand only belongs to his father's gotra throughout his life.

Marriages within the gotra ('sagotra' marriages) are not permitted under the rule of exogamy in the traditional matrimonial system. The word 'sagotra' is union the words 'sa' + gotra, where 'sa' means same or similar. People within the gotra are regarded as kin and marrying such a person would be thought of as incest. The Tamil words 'sagotharan' (brother) and 'sagothari' (sister) derive their roots from the Sanskrit word 'sahodara' (सहोदर) meaning co-uterine or born of the same womb.

In communities where gotra membership passed from father to children, marriages were allowed between maternal uncle and niece,[6] while such marriages were forbidden in matrilineal communities, like Malayalis and Tuluvas, where gotra membership was passed down from the mother.

A much more common characteristic of south Indian Hindu society is permission for marriage between cross-cousins (children of brother and sister). Thus, a man is allowed to marry his maternal uncle's daughter or his paternal aunt's daughter, but is not allowed to marry his father's brother's daughter. She would be considered a parallel cousin who is treated as a sister.[7]

North Indian Hindu society not only follows the rules of gotra for marriages, but also had many regulations which went beyond the basic definition of gotra and had a broader definition of incestuousness.[8] Some communities in North India do not allow marriage with some other communities on the lines that both the Communities are having brotherhood.[9]

Cousin marriages are disgusting and sick. Dating your own cousin is fcked up on another level.
Apparently it's been happening all around in Pak lately according to the article teenage girl's interviewed were claiming they had lost virginity to their cousins

I can't link it, its from my universities database n wont allow to be copied/linked externally.

Even though cousin's are prohibited from marrying in hindu/sikh religions, but cousins having sex is on a huge rise in India. I am not sure how true that claim is though.
