Pressure on Maoists increases after major arrest

The arrest of Maoist leader Kishenji's deputy seems to have increased the pressure on Maoists to come to the talks table.

In a fresh statement issued by a close associate of Kishenji, the Maoists have now called for talks with the Home Ministry on how to implement a ceasefire on both sides.

"In response to Chidambaram's offer as soon we announced that we were willing to suspend operations if the state too stopped operations, Lal Mohan Tudu, one of the prominent leaders in Lalgarh was murdered by the security forces. This shows that the state isn't keen on a dialouge. Second, the Ministry of Home Affairs hasn't yet responded to our offer. We feel both sides, the Ministry and the Maoists, should sit across the table and decide how and when to stop operations on both sides. The DMK and TMC are misleading the people on the issue of price rise. And finally, West Bengal state Maoist Committee member Deepak should be released immediately," said Kishenji's aide Raju.

The Union Home Ministry however maintains that if the Maoist's are serious about talking to the government, they should stop violence just 72 hours and the Ministry would surely respond to that gesture.

The Ministry also maintains that there have been 18 incidents of violence since Kishenji made his first conditional offer. This includes a school building being blown up and several heinous attacks on innocent civilians.

INDIAN police have arrested a senior Maoist rebel blamed for an attack on a police camp in the east of the country last month that killed 25 people, officials said yesterday.

The man, known by the names Deepak and Venkateswar Reddy, is a close associate of the rebels' top commander Kishenji, West Bengal government official Raj Kanojia said.

A special police team arrested the 45-year-old Reddy late on Tuesday in Kolkata, capital of West Bengal state and one of the many areas across India afflicted by Maoist violence.

"Reddy is a key aide of Maoist leader Kishenji," Kanojia said, adding that intelligence officials had been shadowing him for several days.

"He is an explosives expert and we think he had a major role in the Silda attack that claimed the lives of 24 policemen and a civilian in a western district of West Bengal," Kanojia said.

The official was referring to the February 15 attack in restive Midnapore district, in which around 20 rebels attacked a police camp using guns and landmines.

Police at the time described the armed assault as the worst ever by Maoists on security forces in West Bengal.

The Maoists said they were responding to a large-scale government offensive.

India's government considers Maoist rebels to be the country's biggest internal security threat.

The leftist insurgents are estimated to number 10,000-20,000 and are predominantly active in a large swathe of the country from the north and east - called the "Red Corridor." The Maoist insurgency began as a peasant uprising in 1967 .AFP

Bhubaneswar, March 3 - A Maoist guerrilla Wednesday surrendered to the police in Orissa's Gajapati district, officials said. The rebel has been identified as Jayab Majhi from the district's Adaba area. He had joined the Maoist outfit five years ago and was involved in several cases of violence in the district, an official said

Do remember that these Naxals are also Indian's. 99% of them are misguided individuals who have been told the wrong story by certain disturbed People. Killing them is not the solution, infact it will only make things worse. We need to follow Mahatma Gandhi’s solution here and solve the problem from its roots. The equal distribution of wealth is the major issue and the government should tackle that. Introduction of jobs and incentives into rural area is necessary if we want to solve this problem once and forever. Killing them is only a short-term solution, the long-term solution must a gradual change in Indian society from a city-obsessed community to a place where villages also offer the same opportunities that a city like Mumbai would.

These guys have legitimate concerns, the state has ignored them for decades so we must do all we can to accommodate their needs, that said, the state needs to establish its writ, if every tom dick and harry picked up a gun every time they were upset the country would fall apart.

The Maoists should be made to surrender, but not at the cost of innocent lives, things haven't gotten as bad yet to necessitate an approach like that of Sri Lanka.

these Maoists are freedom fighters, they want their will to be respected, they want to live in their own independent country and escape from the repression of the regime in new delhi.
