President’s message on the eve of birthday of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore


The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee in his message on the eve of birthday (May 9, 2015) of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore has said: -

“I join my fellow citizens in paying homage to Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, the first Nobel laureate of Asia and one of the greatest intellectual icons of India, on the occasion of his 154th birth anniversary.

It is significant that even after lapse of a century, Tagore has not lost relevance. On one hand, his literary exuberance continues to win him millions of fans in India and across the world. On the other hand, his ideas and concepts on subjects such as education, village reconstruction, cooperative endeavour and many others still guide our path to a better and brighter world.

Tagore’s concept of education, modelled on the ideal of ancient Indian ‘Tapabona’ encourages young learners to savour joyous education in the open outdoors rather than dry and dreary classrooms. The need for a symbiotic relationship between man and nature is an idea whose time has come. Similarly, Tagore’s ideas on rural reconstruction based on cooperative farming, guided by the policy of self-help and mutual harmony are reflected in the concept of “Community Colleges” which are now accepted globally.

A century ago, Tagore envisaged mutual cooperation of nation and civilization, anticipating the idea of globalisation. In today’s strife-torn world where disruptive forces are raising their ugly heads to destroy peace and mutual friendship, Tagore’s message of universalism carries solace and inspires confidence in a better future.

On the occasion of the Gurudev’s birth anniversary, let his words from Gitanjali (Song of Offerings) resonate in the air –

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.”

The name "Tagore" itself is the British corruption of the name Thakur since the family was in bed with the East India Company. Rabindranath's grandfather, Dwarkanath, owned steam tug companies and coal mines, became a favourite of Queen Victoria's and died in England (his tombstone is in Kensal Green cemetery).

"Thakurs" if you are not familiar were ZAMINDARS, the tax collectors for the British East India Company.

Much of his wealth came from growing Opium and selling the drug to China. In short he was a glorified Drug King pin. This is his Grave in London.

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee in his message on the eve of birthday of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, which falls on May 9, 2016, has said: -


“On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, I pay humble tribute to this great creative genius, who authored India’s national anthem and won for Asia its first Nobel Prize in literature.

An intellectual giant, he was fascinated by the idea of interaction between civilizations through the exchange of knowledge about their cultures and literatures. He was the perfect ambassador of our country at a time when little was known about India in the outside world.

Gurudev Tagore set forth a vision of peace and fraternity that continues to have relevance and global appeal. In a world fettered by race, creed and colour, Gurudev Tagore promoted internationalism for a new world order based on diversity, open-mindedness, tolerance and co-existence.

Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore was a great soul, who not only illumined the time he lived in, but continues to remain an inspiration for humanity. Let us use this occasion to draw inspiration from Tagore’s idea of oneness of humanity.”

Cairo: India will organise a cultural festival in Egypt to mark the 156th birth anniversary of the famous Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore.

Tagore Festival which is being organised by the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC), the cultural wing of the Indian Embassy in Cairo, from May 8-12 will feature a dance show, film screening, a play and painting competition.

On May 8, the movie 'Kabuliwala' directed by Hemen Gupta will be screened at the Hanager Cinema, Opera House Complex. The movie is based on a novel written by Tagore about an immigrant from Kabul who forms a bond with a young girl in India who reminds him of his daughter in Afghanistan.

A dance drama based on Tagore's work called 'Chitrangada' will be presented by Dancers' Guild. Chitrangada is the warrior princess in the ancient Indian epic, Mahabharata. Dancers' Guild is a well-known dance company based in Kolkata in the Indian state of West Bengal.

'Chitrangada' will be performed at the Sayed Darwish Theatre in Alexandria on May 9 and at the Arab Music Institute in Cairo on May 11. The festival will conclude on May 12 with 'Rituranga Play of Seasons' which will be performed by members of the Indian community at the Hanager Theatre, Opera House Complex at 7:30 pm.

The Embassy is also organising a painting/drawing competition for the Indian community children on May 12. Rabindranath Tagore received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. He was the first non-European to win this prestigious award, in recognition for his collection of poems, 'Gitanjali'. His poetry, novels, plays, short stories and essays are widely read in India and across the world.

His songs have been set to music, his plays have been enacted as dance drama and his novels have been filmed. He is an integral part of India's literary heritage and a towering figure in Bengali literature who continues to inspire creativity even in the contemporary world.

Tagore is not unknown to Egypt. He visited Egypt as a young adolescent in 1878 and later as a famous poet-philosopher in 1926, when he met King Fouad and interacted with scholars in Alexandria and Cairo. His friendship with Egyptian poet Ahmed Shawki is well known and he wrote a moving eulogy on his friend's death in 1932.

He was impressed by the strong literary trends and found great resonance in the intellectual movement in Egypt. He also wrote about the beautiful relationship between the noble Nile River and the flourishing civilization of Egyptians.

The Tagore Festival is organised in cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, Cairo Opera House, Cultural Production Sector, Dancers Guild and the Indian Community Association in Egypt.

Exhibition to commemorate the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, inaugurated at NGMA, New Delhi

Exhibition titled ‘Gurudev: The Journey of the Maestro’, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore was inaugurated at The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), New Delhi, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, yesterday, the 7th May 2018. The exhibition was inaugurated by H.E. Mr. Daniel Chuburu, Ambassador of the Embassy of the Argentine Republic to India, Mr. Jeffrey Sexton, Minister Counselor for Public Affairs from U.S. Embassy,New Delhi, Prof. Dr. Zoltan Wiliam, Director, and Cultural Counselor, Hungarian Information and Cultural Centre, Embassy of Hungry, Mr. Zhang Jianxin, Cultural Counselor, Embassy of the People's Republic of China in India, Mr. Santiago Ruy Sanchez, Cultural attaché, Embassy of Mexico to India and Mr. Carlos Varona Nervion, Director, Spanish Cultural Institute, New Delhi.

Speaking on the occasion, Director General, NGMA, Shri Adwaita Garanyak said that “These artworks of versatile genius give a glimpse of his precious contributions to the visual language.” Speaking about Rabindranath Tagore he said “The maestro was fascinated by the worlds of literature, art, music and dance at an early age. In 1913, he became the first Indian to receive a Nobel Prize in Literature for his novel 'Geetanjali'. He left his imprint on art and played a role in huge transforming its practices and ushering into modernism.”

Post inauguration ceremony witnessed Welcome Song “Ekla Cholo Re” by Children and a musical concert by Hungarian Duo – Mrs. Virág Kiss pianist and Mr. Sándor Dezső cellist on Rabindra Sangeet.

The exhibition will be on view for public from Friday, 8th May 2018 to 10th

June 2018, from 11 am – 6.30 pm, except on Mondays and National holidays.
