Xi can meet Abe because hes the biggest anti Japanese leader leader in a long time. Just like how Nixon could start ties with the PRC because he is the biggest anti commie of the time.

If Xi is a weak leader and he meets with Abe, the domestic audience would lynch him.

The so called meeting was NOT MENTIONED on CCTV news at all other than the TV film showing the embarrassing handshakes
So when I re-read the posting by the OP it seemed to have a meeting
There used to be a news photo of representatives from the 2 countries sitting at either side of a long conference table
If I see that photo, I'll say sorry to you
