MUHAMMAD RIAZ
LAHORE (April 26, 2011) : The Russian Consul General, Andrey Demidov, has said that Pakistan Steel Mills would be on top of the agenda during the visit of President Asif Ali Zardari to Russia on May 12. Addressing Lahore Chamber of Commerce (LCCI) members here on Monday, he said that Russia, being top energy supplier in the world, is ready to extend co-operation to Pakistan for overcoming energy shortages.
There are possibilities of co-operation in energy sector during the upcoming visit of President Asif Ali Zardari to Russia, he said. A great potential exists for Pakistani businessmen in rice, fruits, pharmaceuticals, sports goods, leather, apparel, hosiery, home textiles and fabrics. Thus Pakistani businessmen should join hands with their counterparts in Russia, he added.
The Consul General said that for fruits, the Russian market size is $5.77 billion out of which 80 percent fruits are imported. The market size for pharmaceuticals is $14 billion with an annual growth of 11.4 percent and out of which 74 percent are imported by Russia.
Demidov said that in Russia, $3 billion worth of sports goods are currently imported and Pakistani sports goods manufacturers have a great possibility to expand their business. He said that the same is the case with leather and apparels as Russia is importing $10 billion worth of leather goods and the worth of apparels is $21 billion. He urged the LCCI president to arrange sector-specific delegation so that the Pakistani businessmen could have first-hand knowledge about the available opportunities in Russia.
Chairman of Pakistan Russia Business Council of the Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Muhammad Farooq Afzal said it is matter of great satisfaction that last several years witnessed substantial expansion in contacts between Pakistan and Russia at high and people to people levels. The current trends are positive which would provide opportunity to the people of both sides to better understand each other, which could help exploit existing potential for mutual benefit.
There has been positive shift in the trade policy of Pakistan and Russia towards each other, with the result that the bilateral trade is gaining momentum, which was stagnant in the past due to the influence of global politics. The trade volume, which was registered at $67 million in 1998-99, rose to $650 million in the year 2009-10 and a similar trend is also being witnessed in the current fiscal year.
