A former Indian Air Force officer says that with limited funds, the Indian Armed Forces have more urgent procurement needs, such as fighter aircraft, smart weapons and S-400 IADS. He is of the opinion that the US wants India to purchase its Predator drones in exchange "major defense partner" status.

New Delhi (Sputnik) — The US has offered to supply long endurance, high-altitude surveillance armed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), capable of hunting and destroying targets across seas and over land borders with India. The offer comes a year after the US manufacturer refused to sell the armed UAV's and instead offered the non-combat version of the Predator drones to the Indian Armed Forces.

"The Pentagon's decision to supply Predator-B drones to Indian military has been conveyed through official channels and that it is now up to the Narendra Modi government to take the final call based on the overall cost of India's drone program," the Hindustan Times reported.

India Tests Domestic Drones Modeled After General Atomic’s Predator
A former officer of the Indian Air Force told Sputnik that the Indian government may be initiating discussions on the deal simply because it is under pressure from the US.

"President Trump's decision to allow sales of armed drones is aimed at boosting profits of aerospace giants such as General Atomics, not at mitigating the threat posed to India by China and Pakistan. Conceivably, the US is pressurizing India to buy the drones as a quid-pro-quo for awarding India the status of a major defense partner," Vijainder K. Thakur, defense analyst and former Indian Air Force squadron leader told Sputnik.

Thakur is of the opinion that the Indian government should instead pursue the local unmanned fighter aircraft project that would give the air force the same advantages.

"Looking ahead, India needs to vigorously pursue the Ghatak project which aims to develop an autonomous low observable (LO) unmanned fighter aircraft capable of operating in the heavily contested airspace. The Ghatak would be able to strike targets in Pakistan without putting the aircrew at risk," Thakur said.

Last November, India's defense ministry expressed interest in procuring at least 22 Predator B Sea Guardian drones at a cost of approximately $2 billion. But the deal was stuck in an impasse with the US manufacturer offering only the non-combat version and that too without transfer of technology.

Now with the Trump administration easing the norms for the sale of combat drones, the Indian government will be discussing the technicalities of the procurement with the US team of defense officials and technicians that arrived in New Delhi on Thursday. However, a final deal can only materialize if a consensus is struck between the two sides on the Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA) and the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA) which India needs to sign before operating highly advanced US defense platforms requiring secured communication and spatial equipment.

India is hesitant on above. India wants to put it's signature on a case by case, piecemeal basis, which the US does not agree.

Stalemate, impasse.

If we have all these NATO members signing such document, what is your problem - US to India.
India is worried about the future implications by tying its hands and restraining itself in the process.

Hence on armed predators deal; There's many a slip twixt the cup and the lip.

don't believe this news. 2+2 meeting is specifically to close this deal and sign CISMOA & BECA agreements.

The meeting is for India to tell them a case by case agreement has to be signed. Imo, it'll take a lot of effort for the "forward looking" modern wh*res to convince the old fashioned bureaucracy that we should be slaves.

The source is Sputnik and It reflects Russia's position.

There are two agendas here. One is the Ghatak vs American armed drones.

The second one is an IAF vs IN spat.

The Americans cleared drones for the IN, but not the IAF. So the IAF is like, "Money should be spent on more important stuff". But at the same time, the IAF is pushing for the inductions of Avengers.

India cannot place 100+ order unless IAF is onboardalong with IN on this deal.

Pakistan was a U.S. ally for over half a century & major non-NATO ally for over a decade. Yet the U.S. refused to sell us offensive weaponry that can be used against the enemy across the border.

Then U.S. offers our enemy offensive weaponry which will obviously be used against Pakistan on it's own territory just like that? Wow, with sub-human trash scum like the U.S. for friends who needs enemies.

Bunch of back-stabbing p1g inbreds that the world will surely not miss when the armies of the East finally unite and take down this evil Zionist empire.

It still is.
While India is not on the list.

The US believes in one China policy, yet Taiwan is given a major Non NATO Ally.
The US may act in its national interests, similarly, its same for Pakistan.

US sells weapons only to lackeys like India and does not to strong powers like Pakistan and Turkey.

you're all wrong USA always treat Pakistan as servant and then throw it away and put sanctions on Pakistan, but currently India is playing the role of puppet for USA against China @PurpleStone get real dude @PurpleStone

Every time they put sanctions they realized their mistake and came back to Pakistan with a begging bowl. Pakistan has always been in the driving seat. Remember Pakistan is China's Israel. Pakistan ke liye China Kuch bhi karega.
