Pranab Mukherjee is all set to be 13th President of India

. .
The whole idea is to clear the way for Rahul Gandhi post 2014 Elections. Pranab was the only possible contender for the PM's post. MMS with two tenures would be out of the running and could carry on his inefficiency elsewhere.

Never mind if we get one lollypop after another at Raisina Hill.

I am sorry the Abdul Kalam could not make it , a pity. In fact in all fairness the Vice President Hamid Ansari should have become the President.

I was also thinking the same.. Cos the next senior leader is pranab, which means Rahul cant become PM..
So now Route is cleared for Rahul...

...in addition to the above, the added advantage of having Pranab as the Pres is that in 2014 should there be hung verdict ( which it very well would) a pliable President will help to ask the Rahul / Priyanka led Congress to form the Govt, and once formed it can pull through after horse trading.

I was hoping to see Sir Kalam occupy that seat intead of dada :undecided:

I think Sir Kalam will continue to do good work, as he already is !!!

It's better to get dada out of finance ministry .. and mamata coming off the back of congress is a big bonus.

.
So we could see a new finance minister then! This is great news, anyone has got to be better than this idiot who has opposed MMS's reforms at every turn and is a major reason why India is in a bit of trouble economically. Hopefully the next FM comes into the job knowing what trouble the nation faces and is prepared to do what is needed and works WITH MMS.

Chidambaram, Jairam Ramesh and Anand Sharma are doing the rounds....

My first preference would be Chidambaram and second Jairam Ramesh .... Chidambaram has done something in Home ministry, though even more was expected from him.

All the same, it won't be the chidambram of UPA-1 who returns .... he has plenty of troubles this time. The only thing is no one else is tested .. and available.

To be fair to Chidambram he has done some good work at MHA and he could be a good candidate.

But, I don't like his opposition to Nilekani's UIDAI .. .. which is doing something of profound importance.

My best bet for someone pushing across GST would have been chidambaram ... .but he failed to get NCTC through. That one thing has tarnished his performance record. (Reasons for why something didn't get done are not important... the thing is he failed to get it done.. politically, strategically whatever).

If he couldn't foresee NCTC getting thru .. he should have gone another way.

We can't afford that he repeats an NCTC .. to the GST.
GST is a big thing !!!

So, is Aadhaar ... !!

I don't think Aadhaar has got any threat of being closed down now. That way it is run- more like a pvt company than a public one and remaining in the background going about their business without ruffling feathers. I also hold out hope for NCTC coming of age son enough.

Actually, Aadhaar isn't a roller coaster anymore .. which it was a few months back. (And I not blaming it all on Chidambaram, alone -- In fact, Chidambaram roadblock is a minor hassle).

1. The Aadhaar number generation is limping.. nearly static at 17.8 crores (most of which was accomplished by end of march).

https://portal.uidai.gov.in/uidwebportal/dashboard.do#

2. This report has serious implications: http://uidai.gov.in/images/role_of_biometric_technology_in_aadhaar_authentication_020412.pdf

If Aadhaar needs to be able to tide over authentication issues .. the authentication is only by fingerprints (not by IRIS).

3. The Hyderabad fraud unravelled is a really serious headache which needs to be sorted out:

Aadhaar scam did not stop with kingpin - The Times of India

4. Only 10 crore people have received Aadhaar (out of 17.8 crores numbers generated). This is too low for Aadhaar to reach a critical mass.

5. Half the states will be covered by National Population Register ... so UIDAI closes shop in key states like Uttar Pradesh (.. and this courtesy Chidambaram).

UIDAI should have been allowed to operate freely ... using it's own model, all over India.

Till we have a means to deliver cash directly to the poor people.. rural demand cannot rise. All the same, the rich people corner most of the subsidies .. and that money gets wasted.

Govt of India pays 300,000 crores in susisdies every year ... which means Rs. 3,000 per person (i.e. Rs. 12,000 per family of four). Huge things happen if this Rs. 12,000 starts reaching ... .even the poorest of the poor !!!!!

But there is no way to do this .... unless Aadhaar start working efficiently... including the Aadhaar authentication and Aadhaar-enabled payment services.

-----

It's like a ERP project implementation in a big company .... if someone has tried to implement it, you know the troubles ...and the variety of ways in which an ERP implementation fails !!!!

And initial stages of the implementation foretell, whether it's going to stick or fail.. after a considerable amount of expenditure.

i am happy that after 5 years we will get a president who have repute & stature not only in India but internationally also. There will be many pros of his selection to the post of president:

1. He will abide by the constitution & will not waste govt. money like "great" Prathiba Patil.
2. He will not be write off as the rubber stamp president.
3. Presidential visits also to foreign countries now will be seen on par with the PM's visit.
4. He knows his job very well & i hope he will do a great job as the President of this country.

Finally, after such a hard work of lifetime he is getting rewarded (naturally he deserved it) though i would have liked him as PM instead of MMS.

Also have to acknowledge that he was not doing well as FM so i hope someone like C Rangarajan takes his place.

Also there will be now many questions with his promotion to the Presidentship:

1. Who will be the next FM
2. Who will be the no. 2 in UPA
3. Who will be the leader of house in Lok Sabha
4. Who will troubleshoot already troubled UPA
5. Who will head so many GOM's which Pranab headed earlier

C rangarajan is also doing the rounds.. but he's a political weakling, just like MM Singh.

We also need "bull dog" characteristics in the next FM... and that part only chidambaram can provide, so far ... among the names doing the rounds.
