I actually find these incidents quite incredulous. I mean doesn't it strike the compromised person even once that he is doing something strange? Or why the woman is requesting for sensitive information. As per this India Today article, the man in question is just 24 years old. How much does the establishment trust a 24 year old with sensitive information? He went from Jodhpur to Delhi to get this information. I am sure travel approvals and reason for visit must have been filed. Just how much porous is the system exactly?

It is not so surprising for me.

a. People are often naive about what to believe and what not to believe on the internet. This could be more of a problem for Indians from rural parts of the country as they are not exposed to online interactions because of lower internet penetration in the rural areas.
b. The 'women' who interact with young males will likely first 'prove' that they are real by pictures, some recorded videos or video calls. Online profiles etc. can all be faked with some time and effort. Then the 'women' are likely to ask the victims to 'prove' that they are placed in XYZ area with pictures etc. Slowly ask to see more and more details like recce. The relationship itself could go on for years at a time.

Perhaps, the only long term solution would be to educate children about the fickle nature of interactions in social media from school.

In most cases, I believe the assets who are groomed and honey trapped to provide low level details that are not too sensitive. This incident may also be one such case - a simple recce of the area. But later on, the same assets can be blackmailed for more serious information if they progress in their career.

I'm sure that the armed forces educate the personnel about such cases with routine exercise. It may even be sufficient to thwart 99% of such attacks, but 1% success is all that the attacker is looking for. Deception is successful because the threat agent is able to win the trust of the gullible party before any demands are made. The victim in this case was decieved into thinking that he was in a relationship with another Indian, not a Pakistani. Real awareness is possible only when we have an instinctive and not a rational response for such overtures. Only training from a young age can give an instinctive cynical response to these type of attacks in general population

I think you are giving to much credit to these guys. She(?) offered him marriage, seems like a desperate lonely guy who was eager for some affection.

The classic honey pot involves actual sex which is why these honeypots of Indian officers makes even less sense.

I think its easier for you to accept that an officer can be swayed by sex and or sexual interaction online cuz the alternative sounds so absurd to everyone but you are just assuming that is the case here. Had it been i am sure sensational Indian media would have reported that aspect.

The larger issue is what Jekyll posted above about such a young guy having such easy access to classified info and being able to easily move between cities and im assuming bases to access classified information.
