PPP govt added 1708 megawatts to national grid: Gilani

ISLAMABAD, Jul 27 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said the present government added 1708 megawatts to the national grid while additional 2000 megawatts are planned to be included during the current year. In his opening remarks at the energy review meeting here on Tuesday at PM Secretariat, the Prime Minister stated that government of Pakistan was making strenuous efforts to bridge the gap between demand and supply, yet there were several challenges which had to be tackled with a well thought out national approach.

The Prime Minister appreciated the public and provincial governments’ cooperation for participating in the efforts of power conservation in national interest.
He acknowledged both the federal and the provincial governments had shown high commitment in implementing the conservation measures. He thanked the Chief Ministers and their respective teams for demonstrating such support and commitment.
Welcoming the Chief Ministers, Federal & Provincial Ministers and other participants in the meeting convened to review implementation of the Energy Summit decisions and evaluate the desirability of their continuity beyond 31st July 2010, the Prime Minister observed that the crisis has imposed heavy costs on economy and people have to endure long hours of loadshedding.

As you know, he added, the country has been in the grip of a persistent energy crisis since the last several years.
The Prime Minister mentioned that the Energy Summit was held in April this year to evolve national consensus and mobilize public support for the future energy roadmap of the country, particularly the conservation measures to provide immediate relief in the situation.

He said the summit was a major success for the political leadership of this country. For the first time ever national consensus was achieved on the national energy roadmap, he added. Subsequently, he said that the Energy Summit decisions were reviewed on 10th May 2010 and it was decided to reinforce their implementation to ensure immediate relief in energy situation in the country.
The Prime Minister pointed out that there are still gaps in implementation of some conservation measures. Notwithstanding these gaps, he added, impact of the conservation measures has been impressive. He observed that the situation this year is better than the last year.

He pointed out that about 1500 megawatts electricity is reportedly being saved per day. He mentioned that saving due to Saturday closure is reportedly 500 MW which has provided the much needed relief to industry, agriculture and household consumers.
He further said that in financial terms, the government is saving about US $ 150 billion in operating costs.

The Prime Minister apprised the meeting that recently the government of Pakistan jointly evolved an energy roadmap to eliminate loadshedding in the country which will be presented to the Inter-Ministerial Committee of FODP in October this year for funding and technical support of the international community.
He said government of Pakistan is making strenuous efforts to bridge the gap between demand and supply, yet there are several challenges which have to be tackled with the well thought out national approach.
The Prime Minister said the government is making all-out efforts to bridge the gap between demand and supply. He appreciated that the approval of Diamir Bhasha Dam by the Council of Common Interest is a milestone.

He pointed out that the Dam will provide 4500 MW of power, in addition to the much needed water storage capacity for agriculture.
The Prime Minister said the government announced a Vision Statement for the power sector which envisages addition of 20000 MW by 2020. He further said that the new vision depends heavily on use of indigenous fuel resources like coal, hydel, gas and renewables.
He hoped that the World Bank would come out strongly in support of this vision with a higher financial outlay.
He informed the participants that the government was given the understanding that the World Bank had agreed to provide support for coal-based power projects.

He asked the Ministry of Water and Power to provide necessary support for infrastructure development in Thar Coal area.

@ JJ: Thanks for believing Pakistan govt. for once! and that too so strongly!!!!!!!!!!

I think its wrong to say PPP added, we know PPP is in gov power elections are 2 years later so relax Prime Minister Sahib and say gov added such and such when elections are due you can abviously be poud of your work under PPP.

But things are moving ahead well :pakistan:

They have added power to the grid, but no where near 1500MW.

just 500 MW i suppose.

Still, there are many projects in the line, especially the 500MW one for Karachi, which should make things better there at least.

I think they did add 1708MW but RPPs are way to expensive for our poor public. Well i hope we will have cheaper electricity after the installation of Hyder and coal power projects already under construction

Good, now they need to stop putting PPP labels all over it. Energy demand will always grow as a natural phenomena. If they added extra capacity that has nothing to do politically with their party. It is the job of KESC and WAPDA. No matter what government is in power they need to add more capacity for rising demand.

End of the day the world knows Pakistan by its government not a party. We are not a monarch of communist country. Though PPP has communist like agenda.

Zardari says he gets guidence from Benazir in his dreams... wow ... is anyone willing to believe that ?? ...

PPP govt added 1708 megawatts to national grid( in my wet dreams) : Gilani

oh you had a wet dream :woot:
hmm so you are now grown up!
yeah go and take a shower now!!!

and do not reply until you have a solid reason why PPP did not add 1708MW of electricity in the national grid

BS. they forcing public to pay higher and higher price per unit and at the same time we are having almost 20-hour load-shedding.

PPP govt is robing the Pakistani public with both hands

Removing subsidies is a necessary step. Please go and learn some basic economics, which I'm sure is all "fancy" stuff "not relevant to Pakistan". I'm in no mood to argue any further, especially when it comes to economic illiteracy.

You reduce the line losses, improve collection, catch thieves, add more generation power and make people pay the real price of electricity. Everything step goes hand in hand with the other ones. Additionally, circular debt still stands at nearly a hundred billion, even after 80bn was literally injected into the system to reduce the pressure of circular debt. You create circular debt precisely because rising costs of electricity aren't paid by the people and the state fails to pay subsidies which grow over a couple of years to reach nearly 275 billion. If your highness can take the liberty of studying something other than gossip, I can send papers which predicted circular debt as far back as 2005 and predicted explosion of circular debt in 2007 owing to rising oil prices.

Electricity subsidy paid out last year stood at a colossal Rs. 179.526 Billion. Subsidies stood at 1.5% of GDP last year, after being revised from an earlier figure of 0.9% of GDP, the reason being that the proposed removals of subsidies are delayed/canceled owing to public pressure.

Eliminate subsidies of all kinds. Give ration cards to subsidize food like they were used before '64 and are used in the world. No more subsidies of any kind on energy.

^^ Sorry...but you clearly have no clue or you just are trying to confuse the people in separate issues.

Instead of looking into usual organisational collapse theory of our honest, dilligent and patriot govt. let's look at the subject matter which is challenged it seems we have different perceptions of adding power to grid.
My perception is govt. had commissioned new power plants but it seems govt. is talking of conservation... which is due to their ultra smart policy of loadshedding it self.

Imagine going by Gilani formulae it is possible to add more energy to grid by announcing three holidays perweek.

Half of our electricity is stolen in the process of transmission... major benificiaries are always the ruling party and their relatives, this time around wapda has to feed both political parties (ruling and friendly opposition) and their relatives hence the shortfall.

Pakistan ka khuda hi hafiz.
