ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF), in partnership with Aga Khan Planing and Building Services- Pakistan (AKPBS-P), has set up wind turbines and solar panels to provide environmentally friendly electricity to approximately 6,500 people in 29 villages of district Thatta in Sindh province.

According to PPAF sources, the AKPBS-P, with the support from PPAF, the World Bank and the contribution by the village residents in the form of unskilled labour, installed 29 wind turbines, 29 solar panels and streetlights in various villages located in Thatta, which were without electricity for decades.

The immediate benefit of electrification is improved lighting, which is much brighter, cheaper and safe than that provided by kerosene lamps, the sources added.

They said that by utilizing local and renewable energy resources instead of diesel for power generation, not only protect the environment but also stimulates economic benefits for an improved quality of life.

A key reason why this village has not yet benefited from an electric grid connection is its geographical isolation that offered an extremely low return on investment made in grid extension. This challenge required a local and cost-effective solution which was provided by PPAF.

Pakistan needs to diversify sources of energy and coal, wind, hydel, nuclear, bio. Any power generation project is a plus for the coutry and the economy.

Good news

thanks for sharing...

We need more projects all across Pakistan

saw the news on geo..
the engineer said we have a capacity of creating 100,000 MW near gawadar area by wind turbines. he also mentioned that our current needs is about 20,000 - 25,000 MW.

Gharo Wind Power Plant
Gharo Wind Power Plant is planned to be built at Gharo, Sindh, Pakistan. This will be one of the first wind power project in Pakistan.

The turbine manufacturer Fuhrlaender of Germany and Access Energy Inc of United States have signed an agreement with Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) of Pakistan, to manufacture wind turbines in Pakistan to help establish wind power projects. US-based Access Energy who would set up a 50 MW wind power plant along the general wind corridor in Gharo, would finance the project, whereas the German Company, Fuhrlaender, would transfer the technology to Pakistan for manufacturing of wind turbines along with its accessories to set up a minimum of 1000 MW power plants.

This wind-power plant is being built in the persistently wind-swept corridor of Gharo in District Thatta, Sindh.

Prime Wind Power Technologies International
Pakistan based new company to introduce small and medium size wind turbines to remote areas in Pakistan specially for rural area schools and health centers for daily power need.

Pakistan first needs to crack down on illegal electricity distribution, and corruption then yo'll see how much money and electric power Pakistan really has.

Hi,

That problem is the reality of life----. You need access power to control that problem----once you have enough that you don't have massive power outages---then you can control those who are stealing.

if Pakistan is interested in seriously developing Wind energy, it should be looking in larger wind turbines made by REpower and Nordex, 100 to 150 meter rotor dia offshore setups..
