Must watch this interview of Lt Gen (r) Tariq Khan broadcasted in Arshad Sharif's show yesterday. It is a food for thought for many of the defense enthusiasts.

General Tariq has commanded more insurgency & CT operations than any other general of the Army. He commanded and led Frontier Corps during the Battle of Bajaur, Swat, Buner, Dir and other FATA areas. It was his Battle of Bajaur due to which Army followed its example and implemented due to Op Rah i Raast & Op Rah i Nijaat. Long Live General Tariq Khan !

Interview is long thats why i dont see much responses , but it gives excellent information.

I will highlight some crucial points.

1. Currently, IDP rehab is a slow process. In Gen Kiyani era, a department in Army was made which rehabilitated 2.5 million IDP's in 3 months from Swat. they were issued SMART cards and money and there was no complain.

2. He has never seen such a benign military leadership in 37 years of service which supports democracy and Pak Civil Govt.

3. Pakistan Army is following what Pak Govt tells it to do.

4. Foreign Policy is job of Pak Govt but PA is kept in perspective on issue of National security.

5. COAS and top brass visits to foreign countries are subject to approval of Pak Govt and such plans are made months before, not on spot.

6. Pak Govt gives approval and has full knowledge of foreign dignitaries and military officials who visit GHQ to meet with top brass.

7. In absence of a foreign minister, PA cannot be accused if Pak Govt officials visit GHQ and formulate foreign policy with PA top brass.

8. Policies and laws like National action plan were there already, so its nothing new. NAP looks good but doesnt deliver anything.

9. Pak Govt is supposed to take action on NAP but its not being implemented.

10. Karachi Rangers ops are politicized. PPP thinks its against them. It affects Rangers performance.

11. Extremism mindset and recruitment was from southern Punjab, financing was from karachi.

12. PA is unwillingly centre of gravity instead of people, democracy and govt but since every department in civil abdicated its responsibility.

13. PA budget is lowest in the region.

14. PA soldiers and officers are least paid in the region but their efficiency level is very high which is why nothing in Army stops to a standstill.

15. Civil departments are negligent of responsibilities so PA steps in to cover for them like disaster relief etc

16. Price paid by pakistan in WOT: 20,000+ civilians dead, 6000 soldiers dead, 107 Billion $ loss over all.

17. Coalition support fund was based on roads used and vehicle wear and tear and it was around 80 million $ and most of it used to go budget support fund. Army didnot receive it though it was directed for Army expenses.

18. PA had to fore-go its developmental funds of last 5 years so PAF could buy F-16's.

19. Corruption has played its part in Pakistan like an endemic.

20. General Raheel legacy cannot be defined because PA itself is a legacy.

21. when people started going anti-Army and defaming it, PA junior officers would question seniors why isnt a reply being given about this? seniors would say, Depth of PA is much larger than these people and they will get tired and backdown themselves but PA will remain and this has happened.

22. Corruption plays an important in financing terror. Bhatta collection, Kidnapping for ransom, kidnapping for purpose etc are few ways of raising money for insurgency.

23. In times of Kayani, and DGMO Pasha, the ops in Pakistan started from SW as it was plains terrain and tanks/mech forces could be used. This is why SW cleared quickly but then PA stopped.
A mentality had set in that if PA continues ops phase II towards NW then, we are called USA stooges, but it strategically wrong to stop at SW and not go for NW also. It became difficult to start again for NW.

24. PA held talks with ISAF to curb insurgency from Afghan side so NW ops becomes effective. There were 2000 PA posts compared to around 500 ISAF troops posts for cross border problem. PA destroyed mobile sims usage systems in SW/NW but insurgents started to use Afghan sims and ISAF did nothing.

25. KPK govt didnt want PA action in FATA. when PMLN came in power, they went straight for negotiations till Feb 2014 Talibs said they dont want any negotiations otherwise PMLN also didnt want PA ops.

26. Gen raheel was forced to do ops after situation of attacks in pakistan increased. It was out of necessity only.

27. Talibs overplay when shown lenience and start to spread so PA had to react.

28. Pakistan's biggest enemy is its own society as its very confused.

29. India is an enemy state and India will damage us always on first opportunity and it does.

30. Pakistan lacks a narrative. Pakistan should tell the world about captured Indian spy. india burnt samjhota express and Gujarat.

31. Indian PM is a terrorist who has become a prime minister. He was on UN watchlist and couldnt get visa for USA before he became PM.
