And there is a culture of acceptance of welfare programs ; its a stark dichotomy of how its seen in Japan. In Japan, anyone that is in these programs see it as a source of shame. In fact, many Japanese who lose their jobs and are forced to go into welfare programs become easily depressed, quite a few commit suicide because of the shame. In the United States, I don't think there is this cultural trait that we see in Japan.

I don't know the statistics.There is this impression that most welfare recipients are actually children of welfare recipients. So it is a generational thing that many grew up with and simply accepted as a part of normal life. They are given little incentive to change.

There seems to be this impression by many that if you are not married with kids by 25 you are a failure. So many do the kids route so they feel they are not a complete failure...of course going on welfare does not seem to be part of Iheir failure equation.

Aside from India downwardly revising its poverty line to achieve those bogus numbers, the truth of the matter is obvious when you look at Human Development Index comparisons. The Human Development Index (HDI) is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education, standards of living, and quality of life for countries worldwide.

China is at #91. Certainly room for improvement and I believe China is tackling the issue head on. In fact, China improved 2 places compared to 2013. Meanwhile, India is at #135 with no improvement in sight. Because India would rather screw around with its definition of the poverty line than actually make sure it isn't poor. It's the Indian way. Obviously, China, with 400 million! poor people would be much worse off in every conceivable ranking than shupahypapowa India with only 90 million poor people and so many white servants. And yet...and yet...HDI rankings tell a starkly different tale. Why the huge difference in China's favor? Could it be that China constantly raises the bar for poverty because China wants to truly eradicate poverty while India revises its definition of poverty in the opposite direction because India cares more about "looking good on paper" rather than actually making sure its people have toilets, food, and basic education? Naaah...

By the way, if India went by that new World Bank Formula, and China went by the same formula, China would still have less people under the poverty line. Because China's economy is 5 times larger than Indias. India still loses.

Precisely. For me, i believe that if a person cannot provide himself or herself with a decent job, housing, how can they expect to care for another life? But that's my own personal bias.
