Poverty declines at faster rate

Poverty declines at faster rate
Rejaul Karim Byron

Poverty has declined at a faster 2 percent rate a year on average since 2005, according to the latest household expenditure survey by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). From 2000 to 2005, the poverty reduction rate was 1.78 percent.

The percentage of the population living under the poverty line came down to 30 in 2010 from 40 in 2005
, said Bangladesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman yesterday, quoting government data, at a function organised by Dutch-Bangla Bank Ltd.

BBS officials said they have completed data compilation for the 2010 household expenditure survey and will be able to finish the preliminary report in the next two months.

High economic growth, increased inward remittance and the government’s larger safety net programmes helped cut the poverty rate, officials said.

From 2005-06 to 2009-10 onward, the GDP growth per year was more than 6 percent on average, which was more than 5 percent in the preceding five years.

In2005, inward remittance was only $3 billion, which grew to $10 billion over the years, most of which went to the poor families across the country.

The governments invested larger amounts of money in various safety net programmes. According to Bangladesh Economic Review (BER) the government spent about Tk 13,000 crore through budgetary allocation in fiscal 2009-10.

But economists express concern that the rich-poor gap widened although the poverty rate in percentage of population came down.

But a BB official said the new survey would show whether the rich-poor disparity narrowed.

Really this people does not have any shame...

Two other reports had pegged poverty at higher levels. The Arjun Sengupta report had said 77 per cent of Indians live on less than Rs 20 a day while the N C Saxena Committee report had said 50 per cent of people live below poverty. However, the Tendulkar report with a figure of at 37 per cent, is perhaps more acceptable to the government.

sami poverty is major for many south asian countries, Bangladesh is indeed doing good.
And one day we will see that poverty no more but poverty is hard to get rid of, this poverty will be eradicated and I am 100% confident that
BD will..

Whatever our Indian posters here brag, comparing to the livng standard of India, Bangladesh's living standard is much higher. A visitor to BD and India will see immediately the contrast between the two countries.

Millions of Indians are just dirt-poor, although I must admit India is far ahead in technology than Bangladesh. It amuses me to read posts by people like Abir, who regularly claim that west Bengal economy (or is it living standard?) is 4 times higher than Bangladesh.

These people are certainly the best students of RAW School of Propaganda Machine. This is why these paid guys can afford to spend hours every day to counter the posts sent by the Bangladeshis.

These Indians will even counter a BD claim that says earth is moving around the Sun and will come out with reference books to prove it to be incorrect. They are such a bunch of whining widows!

Per capita gdp of india is way higher than bangladesh , more than half your countrymen live in squalid conditions and then try to cross the border , getting shot. It will take to decades just to reach where we are now. So yeah , shut up and go grow some jute and rice because that's all you people are capable of doing

Like another Pakistani member ,you seem to have confused on Tendulkar report.

How poverty is calculated in India

The earlier definition of India's poverty was based on calorie intake, according to which only 27.5 per cent of people were living below the poverty line as on March 1, 2004 and the number of BPL families were about 6.5 crore (65 million).

The Planning Commission of India recently adopted the Tendulkar Committee's methodology for poverty estimate that includes spends on education and health besides food, taking the number of the poor to a whopping 37.2 per cent from 27.5 per cent estimated earlier in 2004.

As India prospers economically ,naturally we increase the parameters to define poverty, hence the new definition results in the above observed increase

Anyway,Congrats Bangladesh.

Well seems like India just joined the club. We had been following these UNDP method of calculating poverty all along.

Only a complete loser like the thread starter will try to throw on India instead of quietly rejoicing in his own country's achievements. What a goddamn bunch of thorough losers.

Yeah RAW pays me for developing applications for a world leading bank.

It's just plain math, see the gdp and population of WB and BD and do the interpolation.

.
Anyway congrats to BD, you have done great job! Just try to be content with your success and if possible dig British understatement a bit.

People like you will deny everything despite after seeing everything...this is your countries report which even cited 77% of the people live with less then 20 rupee per day...which is less then half a dollar... N C Saxena Committee report had said 50 per cent of people live below poverty... but your government has accepted the figure of 37% as this is the lowest...but in the case of bd it is 30% and for pakistan it is 17%... even in one case bharti government has decided that...to reduce poverty to 27% by 2015....

see here is the difference between bangladesh n india where 1/3 of the poor people of the world... n regarding rice ... it is your poor farmers who produce this n your country sell it to us n we pay you in dollar... where as millions of poor indian live in hunger n your farmers commit suicide for not paying debt...

come to reality...

.
Good job bangladesh. We need to learn many things from you.
There is nothing wrong in learning from others, be it bangladesh or USA.

Anyway,Congrats Bangladesh.

Do not do bluff... look at the tendular report... it precisely described the way of calculation poverty.. n it is 77% of the people of india live with less then 20 rupee or .5 dollar a day...n on another occasion it has been cited as 55% n said 1/3 of the poor people of earth live in india...

For your reference...

"According to a new Oxford University study, 55 percent of India’s population of 1.1 billion, or 645 million people, are living in poverty. Using a newly-developed index, the study found that about one-third of the world’s poor live in India.

The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) has been developed by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as a more precise and comprehensive means of estimating poverty levels."
