Islamabad—Pakistan can generate over 350,000 MW electricity through only wind energy against the country’s total demand of about 21,000 MW peak summer, necessitating solid steps to explore the potential. Official sources in Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) told APP that the country’s has numerous resources to get energy and over 50,000 MW energy could be generated only in Gharo-Keti Bandar corridor where average wind speed is more than seven meter per second at only 60 meter height.

They said the corridor has potential twice of India and other sites in Balochistan, Punjab, and northern area, which are being identified for power generation.

The sources said Pakistan has amongst the world highest and fastest rising urbanization and electricity is available to only 61 percent of the population while natural gas to 21 per cent. Only 45 per cent of rural population has access to grid electricity and there is extreme shortage of electricity and gas leading to load-shedding.

The country’s economic growth is also suffering due to load-shedding of gas and power, leading to closures of industries, they added. They said the total installed and dependable capacity of the country’s power sector is 20,231 MW.

Giving breakup, they said 11,735 MW could be get from public sector while 8,496 MW from private sector. “By switching to alternative energy means, Pakistan can reduce dependence on imported oil, running into billions dollars and undermining economic development,” they observed.

They said Mexico, Iran, India, USA, UK, China, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria and Jordan have recently placed orders at the states/utility level for wind power. USA announced $ 150 billion investment in renewable energy over 10 years, Japan $ 12.2 billion in five years, China $ 15 billion in two years and South Korea $ 36 billion over four years.

It is pertinent to mention that USA has wind power installed capacity of 25,170 MW from wind, Japan 1,880 MW, India 9,645 MW, Greece 985 MW, Egypt 365 MW, Iran 85 and Pakistan 6 MW.—APP

wind resoirces are abundant in pakistan. gharo ketibander. there are katabatic and anabatic winds on the mountain ranges.
the problem at the moment is that installation cost is about one million dollars per MW which pakistan can ill afford.
there are ways of cutting down the cost. but lots of research is needed.

Dr. Atta ur-Rehman mentioned once that we can not only reduce the cost of the installation by producing the turbine locally, but also sell it in the international markte where it has a large demand and insufficient supply.
But there is another problem; by installing so many turbines we are effectively slowing down the speed of the wind which can have an ecological impact. The same applies to installing too many small hydel turbines in the water system.

We have to start looking at producing more energy but also reducing the cost per unit at the same time. Wind energy is very cheap in the long run but the initial cost will make it difficult to work with this for now.

Another solution is to install solar-thermal panels on individual homes and other buildings so that the the generated energy could be added to the national grid, increasing the overall production at a significantly lower cost.

Why dont Pakistan build a one mega dam like China three geroge dam which can produce about 30000 MW of electricity?

itna bara dam banao ge kahan?

humain peenay ko paani nahi milta - bijli banane ko kahan se milay ga?

Potential is there bcos kutch area bordering with pakistan has huge wind mill farms...but it takes up too much land...why cant wind mills farms be contructed in sea, in artificial islands formed by dredging??

Well for urgent needs i dont know why dont we go to china or iran who offer electricity unlimited for 300rs per month per household and rs. 1.18 per unit respectively (few days ago an sms was circulating abt this in karachi)

If you fail in something never ever try to demoralize your self because you will fail again.Unfortunately many people are doing it now a days. They should take out the positives from the negatives. This demoralizing is actually an act of submission that you are failed. And besides when it comes to the question of potential in Pakistan it is unparallel all we need to do is to focus on how to utilize this potential.
