Post Ranking

There is this option on the top right of each post +/- for ranking a post.

I have some questions.

1) Why can't I rank anyone's post (I can thank them - is that like a positive rank; but I can't give a negative mark to many posts I see short of just reporting them)?

2) Who have the rights to use this feature?

3) Are there any set criteria for ranking a post or is it a subjective/interpersonal/gut feel thing?

4) If yes, what are they?

5) Is it possible for an Indian poster to get a positively ranked post (come to think of it I have YET to see ANY highly ranked post .... Indian or Pakistani ..... a sign of our cynical times or an indication of our collective post quality)?

6) What is the impact or ramification of the rankings of your posts (anything incremental or any threshold as such)?

the +/- ranking is the purview of the admn,mods and TT members ( i think).
the + is used to appreciate a valuable post (not used as the thanks is more popular)
the - is used to discourage abusive and troll posting. 2 or 3 (-ve) basically 'bumps' the guy to 'never land'

It's a tool primarily through which the TT very kindly helps us out. Anything that gets lowly ranked thrice, is deleted.

Pretty sure I've ranked many of them myself.

The TT members are extremely well respected around here, observe their style of posting to figure out what exactly is appreciated around here.

OK Thanks ..... that pretty much clarifies things ..... to an extent.

Fatman sir, abusive/trolling posts (even those that have multiple Thanks) do get deleted, reported, edited.

So if the post is still left there ...... in its original form ..... but with a negative rating ...... does it mean its kinda offensive to some, but not really over the line as per forum norms, and that while you would rather do away with it, you cannot, so this is used as a "personal disapproval" kind of rap on the knuckles versus an "official disapproval"?

No argument on the quality of your TT and Mod posts by and large, though there are a few in your Staff whose posts leave much to be desired ..... but thats your call I guess.

With due respect to you, I would like to point out that even the TT members indulge in bitter personal attacks and objectionable posting, calling other members as dumbhead, mug, stupid etc and are at times left unckecked.

I think we should have nation specific hit/hate lists, with the power given to aam junta here to vote for posters who they really detest.

A top 5 or a top 10.

On forums like this, its not a post here or there which ticks people off usually.

Its something which builds up over a period of time, by the weight of many posts with a constant tone/theme.

Sort of like a Vote Out ala the reality shows.

Just a suggestion ...... but I think it would be interesting.

The type of respect that they command, the type of life experiences they've had and the overall levels of trust that we have in them, we're pre-disposed to checking out what exactly was it that warranted an outburst from the TT.

Of course, no one is without their checks and balances and we have a hierarchy within the TT (something that we avoid interfering in), such as the elected Chairman and the Vice-chairman of the TT Group. You may even contact them and get yourself mobilized with the TT.

Thanks for the info sir, But I believe that rules of the forum must apply to everyone equally not selectively. The post has been reported quite a long time back and the member in argument with the TT was banned almost instantaneously but sadly no action being taken on the post yet, coz it is TT's post. I know its against the forum rules to discuss the role of management on such issues but could not help but comment when there was discussion about TT.

You may even contact them and get yourself mobilized with the TT

How can that be done?
