Local govt: MQM, PPP agree on People’s Metropolitan Ordinance 2012
KARACHI: After hiccups over a new local governance system, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) have finally agreed on the ‘People’s Metropolitan Ordinance 2012’, a local government formula which is expected to be signed soon, Express News reported on Thursday.According to the terms of the proposed Ordinance, Karachi, Sukkur, Hyderabad, Larkana and Mirpurkhas will be given the status of metropolitan cities which will be managed by a mayor and a deputy mayor instead of the current commissioners.
However, all other cities and towns of of Sindh will be managed under the district municipal corporation headed by a chairman of district councils.
According to sources present at the Chief Minister house, the PPP and the MQM still have to reach a consensus over some points. These changes will be incorporated in the People’s Metropolitan Ordinance once a consensus is reached between the two parties on all aspects of the proposed system.
Earlier, an framework agreed upon by the PPP and the MQM ran into snags when other parties such as the ANP and the PML-F raised objections to some aspects of the proposed system.
Karachi, Sukkur, Hyderabad, Larkana and Mirpurkhas will be designated metropolitan cities with mayor, deputy mayor.
So is there a possibility of M.Kamal Becoming Mayor of Karachi or there will be a new One?
