Portuguese Army buys additional HK416A5 rifles

The Portuguese Army's Logistics Command (CmdLog) has ordered a new batch of 5.56x45 mm Heckler & Koch HK416A5 assault rifles for the army's special forces (Força de Operações Especiais - FOE).

A total of 24 rifles were purchased on 3 December from Heckler & Koch's Portuguese trader, Defmat, for EUR114,372 (excluding VAT). The batch comprises 20 with a 14.5-inch barrel length and four with 16.5-inch barrels for snipers, together with a comprehensive number of accessories.

Portugal is looking to receive the weapon as soon as possible, a CmdLog source told IHS Jane's . Four 7.62x51 mm Heckler & Koch G28 precision rifles were purchased under a separate contract, the source added.

The FOE part of the army's Rapid Reaction Brigade (BrigRR) received a first batch of 18 HK416A5s in November/December 2014 under a contract signed in early November 2014, with a second batch of 22 rifles procured and received in February 2015, an army spokesperson told IHS Jane's . These were a mix of rifles with 11-inch and 14.5-inch barrels.

L-3 Warrior Systems AN/PEQ-16A laser devices, Aimpoint Comp4 sights, and a wide array of accessories were also received.

Don't know why, I test fired 416 a couple of time and did not really like it.........

I will admit the overheating is an issue for G-36, but the build is better than the 416. It just feel weird, it's like holding a M4 but aiming down an AK....

G36 has turned out to be disaster

Actually not that big of a disaster, think of it this way, it take M16 2 generation to be a trusted platform. G-36 is still is young. For it's type. It's only like 20 years old.

416 is a different story, 416 is basically a M-series rifle, they just put what's works with M16 and M4 together.

The HK416A5 is a very good weapon, it came in 11inch, 14.5inch and 16.5inch barrels. These replaced the G36 in the CTOE Lamego (Portuguese Special Forces). The 11inch is for use with a silencer, with it has almost the same lengh as the regular 14.5inch. The 16.5inch is for DMS. The G28 (version HK417) its a very very very acurate weapon and its used by proper snipers. The Portuguese Naval Police Tactical Group also use it. The HK416A5 has fixed any potential problems of the HK416.

The next step for the Portuguese Army is to by 10000 assault rifles, as the HK416A5 is going very good on CTOE probably it would be the one. The HK is commertialy very strong in Portugal. They are offering a full package of pistols, LMGs, MMGs, SMGs, Assault Rifles and Sniper Rifles. Of the 10000 rifles 3000 will go to the BrigMec (Tracked Mechanized Brigade M113 & Leopard 2A6) and 3000 BrigInt (Wheeled Mechanized Brigade Pandur II & V150/90mm) that are using G3A3 and G3A4, and 4000 for the BrigRR (Rapid Reaction Brigade) (1 Bn Special Forces (using G36, SG543 & G3A4), 1 Bn Commandos (using G3A4 & SG543) & 3 Bn Paratroopers (using Galil AR & ARM & G3A4 with HK79). There will be a lot of G3A3 left in service to be replaced, total requirement is for about 40000 assault rifles.

PS: In the CTOE the HK416A5 11inch with suppressor is replacing the MP5SD6 and the G28 is replacing the Accuracy AI.

The 416 is a way better platform then the M4. I would put it through the stress test and give it another go rigorously if I was as lucky as you.
