Pope slams French burqa ban

BERLIN: POPE Benedict XVI criticised a French law banning Muslim women from wearing the Islamic full-face veils in public, saying women should be able to wear them voluntarily, according to a book due out on Tuesday.

'As far as the burqa is concerned, I do not see a reason for a general ban,' Pope Benedict said in a series of interviews in his native German to be published as a book.

'Some women do not wear the burqa entirely voluntarily and it is correct to talk of a violation against that woman. Of course one cannot agree with that,' he said.

'But if they want to wear it voluntarily, I don't know why one must ban them,' he said, according to a copy of the German text.

The ban on full-face veils such as the burqa and the niqab is a hotly contested issue in France, with the government saying it aims to protect women's rights but critics saying it stigmatises Muslims.

France's top legal authority, the Constitutional Council, approved the law in October, and it is due to enter force early next year.

It seems the pope will take any ally he can get against European secularist tendencies. I doubt this means the Catholics has had a sudden change of mind with regards to Islam.

I think Catholics share a similar point of view far as modesty of women are concerned. For example, would the French ban the Catholic nuns from using the head gear. Only difference is that being a nun is a very personal choice, its a religious choice and it is a choice of dedication and is not core to everday life by Catholic women. Even so with Buddhist monks who shave their heads. My personal view is that if a muslim woman wants to wear the head gear from the sincerity of her heart, I dont think that any law and any government should prohibit her. The dispute begins when the perception is that the headgear is enforced, which may also be true.

Indeed. French have historical dispute with Vatican.

People need to learn more about French history and the reasons they adopted this militant secularism.

Do you mean the Huguenots? or the two pope thing? It's probably more complicated than that. Every king in medieval Europe had problems with popes but France or Gaul was the first to be Romanized and later converted to Catholicism. King Clovis was pretty important strengthening the early church.

I don't think so.The new laws are pretty strict.
they get to pay some money to the state and they are thinking of making them go to some courses of what is the rules of laic state.

cardshap is right > France is an important part of catholic history
ther should be no confusion with the revolution then the industrialization and later the nationalism in Europe which weaken religion
French revolution took distance with religion , i mean the catholic power clergy (that's a difference with the priests).
during a century then it was a fight between the conservatives/church power/nobles and the people. with the more and more education and the people and the wealthy France, and with the improved republic ideas... came the time that the "republicans" were doing rules so the church whould not brainwash the people, that the matter of education the matter of administration ... is separate of religion

vatican ? Germany England were taking distance with Nederlands
because they were protestants . Very few are protestants in France. So still France remained a catholic country and appreciated like ths .
Even if evangelists sadly become more and more important in the poor class, especially of people without any education here and in Paris mostly the Black communauty.
These people are fanatics. I heard many times some saying catholics are fake christians. And here is the bastion of protestants where i am living ;) After have been the cathares bastion.

No I meant French Revolution where they put all the priest to guillotine in order to dechristianize society. They even removed the word 'saint' from street names. France always had very short-tolerance for religion.

The period of terror is a small part of French history

and you say such bullshit. if you don't know their history it is better you shut up.
first they didn't kill ALL priests as you claim.
After revolution it was a period of non governance of people they do such hell by themselves.
The church as i explained was strongly linked to the royal power. that's why this happened that they changed the names of streets and destroyed some of religious monuments.

It is nothing to do with a bad french faith, French being bad guys or whatsoever stupid story of you
as well remember that some people take revenge when it is a time of revolution. the name "terror" is coming from these very few years that destroyed the country.

After the revolution in our country (Iran) it was not easy time believe me. It was not this terror but many were killed savagely .
In Russia they had a revolution. Does it mean russians as well hate all religions?

Instead of putting your hatred on a forum, it is better you get some education. good luck

wow! did you have a bad dinner or what?

They keep religion and state away from each other and while they are at it, they sometimes go overboard like that of Turkey. That's all I wanted to say, your honour!

And I absolutely love French! Their food, wine, arts, movies, nude pictures in museums, Carla Bruni ... everything! :D
