Pope slams French burqa ban

wow! did you have a bad dinner or what?

They keep religion and state away from each other and while they are at it, they sometimes go overboard like that of Turkey. That's all I wanted to say, your honour!

And I absolutely love French! Their food, wine, arts, movies, nude pictures in museums, Carla Bruni ... everything! :D
There is something you misunderstand about this country.
And i cannot let you say they killed ALL the priests. catholicism was an important/major part of the society until a century ago. After the European nationalisms it decreased like in all European societies.

About Turkey there are two reasons that newspapers say here:
1/ Europe is a miss for the new members : most countries in Europe think it was not a good idea to make Europe so big so fast
2/ Turkey is shortly in Europe land so some people who are thinking on narrow minded way of continent they don't want Turkey
3/ Germany i heard they worry Turkey being a so big country that it would weaken the power of the major countries of Europe among Germany and France and England
4/ Islamophobia doesn't help IN ALL Europe, not only in France.
Look at nederlands , England, Italia, Switzerland and so.
Since 9/11 things seem to be worst and worst about the picture of our religion.

Killing all the priests was figurative way of talking, they couldn't have killed all the clergies. The points is, they fought a bloody war to get rid of the oppression by Royals and Church and they tried to dechristianize the whole society. The common people remaining religious has nothing to do with it, the state shuns all signs of religions, ironically almost religiously. The present French society is direct consequence of French revolution.

I compared it with Turkey because Turkey also shuns all religious symbols in public.

Secularism can be practised in three ways.

1. State turning a blind eye towards religion.
2. State recognizing all religion as equal.
3. State shunning all religion alike.

In a country like US(I'd have said India, but refrained to avoid future reference of Ayodhya and Gujrat!), the more tolerant way of secularism is followed, where religion is inclusive to the state. In case of France and Turkey(which also saw a revolution and thus separating religion and state) we see the more radical version of secularism.

To each its own, I'd say.

It seems the pope will take any ally he can get against European secularist tendencies. I doubt this means the Catholics has had a sudden change of mind with regards to Islam.

I agree. I think like Islam, Christianity fears the onset of Godlessness which seems to be the general trend through out Europe. However, it is a travesty as an issue, that even women who wear Niqab out of choice, are being prevented from doing so in the name of preserving their rights!!! Whose rights are we preserving?
If there is a security risk, provided appropriate measures are at hand, there is no question that a lady can be asked to remove the niqaab to establish her identity.

On the integration of turkey in EU, it seems that most of ythe opposition is coming from the germans rather than the french(at least on the surface). And Religious diversity seems to be a major issue.

i dont think burka is islamic anyway.

there s nothing Unislamic about Burqa.
I will explain it to you this way.
In Islam, the minimum Satr for Woman is to cover her hair and arms upto the wrists and feet upto the ankles. Some women want to take this further for Allah,s pleasure to cover their fact leaving the eyes open, some would go further and cover even their eyes. Some would go to the extent of not going outside their houses unless absolutely necessary. This is a matter of choice and if done to seek Allahs pleasure has its own rewards.
I hope it explains the thinking behind hijab jilbaab and burqa.
