There are limits to freedom of expression when religion is insulted, agencies quoted Pope Francis as saying in reference to the cartoons in the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. However, he also pointed out that killing in God’s name is an ‘absurdity’.

Francis spoke to reporters on a flight from Sri Lanka to the Philippines.

Answering questions on the Paris attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, he said that freedom of expression was a “fundamental human right” like freedom of religion, but it should be exercised “without giving offense,” according to the Catholic News Service.

“One cannot provoke, one cannot insult other people’s faith, one cannot make fun of faith,” he said adding that every religion “has its dignity”.

The pope explained that one can react violently when being offended. He offered an example referring to his trip planner saying that if his “great friend, says a swear word against my mother, then he is going to get a punch. But it’s normal, it’s normal”.

However he stressed that “one cannot offend, make war, kill in the name of one’s own religion, that is, in the name of God.”

It should be obvious to anyone who is capable of adding two plus two.

No its actually not... if everyone had to live by the religious rules of every religion you would not be in a free nation anymore.

Just because Islamic law tells me that I am not allowed to criticize or even paint Muhamad, I am not obliged to follow these regulations.... otherwise I would be forced to adapt Islamic law.

These people are not saying that Muslims are inferior, they are not advocating or denying mass genocide, they are not hailing terrorist attacks...

They are criticizing certain aspects of a religion like the notion of "holy" war and they merely express their discontent with a person who used violence to force his religious beliefs on other people!

And if somebody cant live with that, he should quickly thinking about leaving the country before trying stupid things... and thats not gonna end well for him...

There is an elementary common sense, which should clearly tell the person that can not be done. You can not shit on someone's grave. You can not rape women. You can not eat people.
You can not make fun of other people's shrine.
This is obvious.

So what? Greek-Catholic priest helped Nazi extremists in the Crimea. I remember watching the story as they found dozens of body armors in the house of such "priest".
Seriously - you're quoting Western sources? They confuse the names and locations of cities and countries on the world map. How can one believe them at all?

So I am not allowed to condemn religious violence because someone feels offended by it?

In response to the title of thread, yes freedom of expression does not mean permission to mock a religion.
But on the other hand, mocking of religion is no excuse to go on a fkin rampage shooting people.
That is batshit crazy!!!

You do not have the right to offend the religious feelings of other people, do blaspheme, spit on the holy things for them.
Is it difficult?

Yes it is.. its not in accordance to my fundamental right to criticize anyone or anything I want.

Your freedom ends where another's person freedom begins. You can not mock the faith of another person. It is an axiom. You're confusing freedom and permissiveness.
Like arrest their clergy?
The criminal case against the priest has nothing to do with blasphemy or mockery someone's faith.

Your freedom does not mean that you can stop me from criticizing somebody else... especially just because some random dude wrote it in a book 1,400 years ago. Nobody can tell me that I have to follow those kind of nonsensical rules.

You see, for some reason I can not allow you to shit on the graves of my ancestors, or make fun of their faith. You have to respect other people, not only yourself and your "freedom" to shit anywhere you want.
