'Poor' Pak politicians are 'stinking rich' in reality

The assets returns filed by members of the Pakistan Parliament’s Lower House in the Election Commission of Pakistan have some unbelievably absurd details.

A majority of them have not shown even a mentionable chunk of the total wealth that they possess in reality, The Nation reports.

While Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani’s net assets stand at over 194 million rupees, what raises eyebrows is that he is ‘car-less’, as he does not have any vehicle registered in his name, and that the value of his posh residence in Multan is measured at a paltry amount of 6.3 million rupees.

Former Food and Agriculture Minister Nazar Muhammad Gondal, Former Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira, former Pakistan People's Party (PPP) spokesperson Fauzia Wahab and a host of other ‘elected public representatives’ join the huge brigade of ‘car-less’ MNAs, who otherwise travel in the most expensive luxurious vehicles.

Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman has one-fifth share in a house in Dera Ismail Khan that values only one hundred thousand rupees, while his another house in the same city values 2 million rupees and five kanals of land in the same area values only five hundred thousand rupees.

Noor Alam Khan of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) is the richest MNA, with his net assets worth over 3.52 billion rupees, while his party colleague Jamshed Dasti is the ‘poorest’ parliamentarian, with no movable or immovable property registered in his name. All he has is a salaried bank account with an unspecified amount in it.

Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) MNA Hanif Abbassi's net assets stand at 19,861,200 rupees, which is equivalent to his liabilities, meaning that the parliamentarian is ‘penniless’.

Dr Farooq Sattar of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has a 2007 model Toyota Corolla vehicle, which surprisingly does not cost more than 500,000 rupees.

PML-Q (likeminded) MNA Kashmala Tariq has 200 tolas of gold, which value over 52 million, but unfortunately, the market value of this gold does not exceed 8 million rupees.

Actually the headline used by Nation is much more suitable.

Poverty-ridden Pakistani politicians!

ISLAMABAD - Unbelievably absurd yet funny details have come to light from the assets returns filed by the public’s elected representatives of the Parliament’s Lower House in Election Commission of Pakistan.

Majority of the MNAs has not shown even a mentionable chunk of the total wealth they posses.

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani’s net assets stand at over Rs194 million. What raises eyebrows, is that a head of state as privileged as Gilani is ‘car-less’ who does not have any vehicle registered in his name. (Poor PM )The value of his posh residence in Multan is measured at only Rs6.3 million.

JUI-F chief Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman has one-fifth share in a house in Dera Ismail Khan that values only one hundred thousand rupees. His another house in the same city values Rs2 million while 5 kanals of land in the same area belonging to JUI chief worth only five hundred thousand rupees.
Fazl-ur-Rehman’s brother Atta-ur-Rehman has one-fifth share in the same aforesaid house that values a hundred thousand rupees.

ANP chief Asfandyar Wali owns a 1988 model ‘outdated’ vehicle worth Rs500,000. The market value of his inherited residential house is only Rs4 million.
The PPP’s Noor Alam Khan is the richest MNA with his net assets worth over Rs3.52 billion while his party colleague Jamshed Dasti is the ‘poorest’ parliamentarian with no movable or immovable property registered in his name. All he has is a salaried bank account with unspecified amount in it. The PML-Q’s Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi uses an expensive jeep worth over Rs26 million and his total assets stand at Rs179 million. Engineer Amir Maqam from the same party has 17 vehicles that cost Rs26 million.

Interestingly, the PML-N MNA Hanif Abbassi’s assets and liabilities provide the same numerical figure. His net assets stand at Rs19,861,200 that is equivalent to his liabilities, which means that the parliamentarian is ‘penniless’

The National Assembly’s Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi has 23 kanals of agricultural land in DI Khan but it values only five hundred thousand rupees. The PML-Q likeminded MNA Kashmala Tariq has 200 tolas of gold that value over 52 million but unfortunately, the market value of this gold does not exceed Rs8 million. In the huge brigade of ‘car-less’ MNAs line up Hamza Shehbaz Sharif, Nazar Muhammad Gondal, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Marvi Memon, Fauzia Wahab and a host of ‘elected public representatives’ who otherwise travel in the most expensive luxurious vehicles.

The PML-N MNA Khawaja Saad Rafique is under ‘debt’ of Rs40 million while Federal Minister Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo is liable to pay bank loans of Rs19.50 million. Foreign Minister of State Hina Rabbani Khar owns a plot in a posh housing society in Islamabad that worth only Rs1.4 million. The PPP’s former federal minister Hamid Saeed Kazmi is allotted a residence in Lahore that values only Rs700,000. MQM’s Dr Farooq Sattar has a 2007 model Toyota Corolla vehicle that does not cost more than Rs500,000. Shakeel Awan from PML-N posses a 10-marla plot in a posh housing society in Rawat (Islamabad) but quite amazingly, the plot does not value more than one hundred thousand rupees.

Assets declared in EC by the High & Mighty

Tariq Butt
Thursday, April 21, 2011

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari’s two sisters Faryal Talpur and Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho, who are members of the National Assembly, together got richer by about Rs90 million in the last one year, mainly due to what they stated phenomenal appreciation of the value of their immovable properties.

Their statements of assets and liabilities filed with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), which is an annual ritual for the MNAs, did not show too many new additions to their properties and other assets.

However, the assets of Faryal Talpur’s minor daughter shot up to Rs44,346,900 as on June 30, 2010 from Rs9,701,700 in 2008, showing a whopping increase of Rs34,645,200. The principal addition of Rs23,919,948 occurred in the column of cash/prize bonds/foreign currency, as an amount of Rs29,834,948 has now been shown compared to Rs5,915,000 in 2008.

As against 2008, the MNA’s assets increased by Rs51,516,570. They were valued at Rs40,756,145 in 2008 whereas they have now been put at Rs92,272,715.

The cost (maybe original) of Faryal Talpur’s assets was shown as Rs74,843,515 in 2010, as listed last year, while their present value was estimated at Rs92,272,715 displaying an escalation of Rs17,429,200.

Included in this increase is the addition of Rs917,024 in her cash/banks/prize bond/foreign currency in hand. Last year, she had an amount of Rs36,425,625 under this head compared to 2009’s 13,049,279, which had shown an increase of Rs23,376,346.

When the appreciation of Rs17,429,200 in the value of her assets is added up to the additional deposit of Rs23,919,948 under the head of cash/prize bond/foreign currency in her minor daughter’s account, the raise in assets goes to Rs41,349,148. But if the increase of Rs34,645,200 in the minor’s assets is counted in the hike in her mother’s wealth, the total jump comes to Rs75,994,348.

However, an amount of Rs12,024,252 has to be deducted from it because Faryal Talpur had shown this sum in her liabilities in her 2009 declaration, which, being the minor’s share in the sale of land, was due to her. She deposited this amount (with an addition of Rs1,000) in her daughter’s account in 2010, according to her declaration.

Faryal Talpur also declared that her minor daughter owns assets valuing Rs44,346,900 - Rs29,834,948 (earlier listed) written in the column of cash/prize bonds/foreign currency, Rs12,025,252 in bank account; 179.18 acres of land in Deh Daiki district Hyderabad valued at Rs1,686,700; 60.33 acres of land in district Mirpurkhas valued at Rs800,000.

The total cost of assets owned by Dr Azra put at Rs36,544,027 appreciated to Rs58,084,151 this year, demonstrating a raise of Rs21,540,124.

This also includes the initial payments of Rs345,000 for two new plots in Karachi, and one plot and 10 acres of land in Nawabshah.

A major share in the appreciation of the value of her assets goes to DHA Karachi house, whose present value swelled to Rs20,000,000 from Rs1,640,000, which shows a colossal jump of Rs18,360,000. There was also an increase of Rs4,271,841 in her cash in hand/banks/prize bond/foreign currency account. Last year, she declared a 2002 model Corolla car valued at Rs845,000, which is not shown in the new declaration.

Faryal Talpur owns 52 acres of land in Deh Dalki (district Hyderabad), valuing Rs1,500,000, which has the original cost of Rs712,300 (same last year); 150 acres of land in Deh Sajna, district Hyderabad, valuing Rs6,000,000 with the original cost being Rs3,636,000 (same last year); 47 acres of land in district Sanghar, valued at Rs500,000 with the original cost being Rs100,000 (same last year); Tractor Fiat valued at last year’s assessment of Rs286,900; equipments having the same value of Rs79,000; arms and ammunition having the same value of Rs33,000; DHA Phase-V Karachi house, now valued at Rs9,000,000 with the original cost being Rs4,580,000 (Rs6,000,000 last year); Gawadar plot now valued at Rs500,000, having the original cost of Rs45,000 (same last year); Kehkashan Clifton Karachi house now valuing Rs12,000,000, the original cost being Rs3,625,000 (same last year); house in Pulgran, Islamabad now valued at Rs2,500,000, which has the original cost being Rs1,872,000 (same last year); has deposited Rs125,000 for a plot in Lahore; Rs41,666 as 1/3 share of a Lahore plot (son); Rs65,000 as 1/3 share in agriculture land of 14.3 acres in Sinjhoro, district Sanghar (son); and Rs510,500 (Rs270,000 last year) for booking defence villa Islamabad.

Like last year, the MNA owned three vehicles: 2007 model Land Cruiser valued at Rs9,200,000; 2007 model Corolla of Rs1,425,000 (Rs950,000 last year) and old Mercedes valued at Rs600,000. She has jewellery/precious stones valuing Rs300,000 as before; has shown Rs37,342,649 against cash/banks/prize bonds/foreign currency in hand whereas it was Rs36,425,625 last year; owns furniture, fittings and articles of personal use valuing Rs450,000 as before.

The MNA has business capital of Rs2,214,000 (same last year) in Asif Apartments; Rs1,400,000 (same like before) in Land Marks; investment of Rs6,200,000 in Gold Field Cattle Farming & Co (Pvt) Ltd, like before; and has shown Rs1,570,000 (like last year) against liabilities: other debts due Tenants Deposit and Advance.

Neither in this declaration nor in the previous ones did Faryal Talpur, who is the chairperson of the women’s wing of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), give the name of her bank or her account number.

Dr Azra also had almost the same assets as last year except with the addition of two plots in Karachi, and one plot and 10 acres of agriculture land in Nawabshah, more bank balance, great appreciation in the price of DHA Karachi house; more payments for DHA valley Islamabad plot and DHA homes Islamabad.

Now, the MNA has shown Rs15,375,051 cash in the column of cash in hand/prize bond/banks/foreign currency account, whereas it was Rs11,103,210 last year. This shows an increase of Rs4,271,841. As against Rs11,103,210 last year, she had Rs731,710 in the year before that. She too did not disclose the name of the bank or account number.

Dr Azra’s assets include DHA Karachi house now valued at Rs20,000,000, the original cost as shown now and last year being Rs1,640,000; plot no A-4, St. S, Lane-5, Ph-1, Gwadar valued at Rs500,000, the original cost being Rs65,900; agriculture land in Preetamabad, Sanghar valuing Rs2,400,000; deposit for plot SECHS, Islamabad (Rs716,200); agriculture land on Mukata development cost valuing Rs230,000; capital in Asif Apartment Rs2,214,000; capital in Land Mark Rs1,351,000; capital in Sajawal Academy Rs7,852,400 as against previous year’s Rs7,302,400; 40 tolas of gold the original cost being Rs150,000, now valued at Rs800,000; furniture and fixture of Rs280,000 and minor son Muhammad Abdul Basit’s 63 acres of agriculture land in Jhando Mari of Rs1,500,000 gifted on July 1, 2004 by grandfather, now valued at Rs2,000,000 like last year.
