What's new

Pompeo said USA won't block Pakistan If it seeks IMF bailout.

We don't need IMF and Imran Khan is working his way around it. His advisors are interested in IMF but tone of Imran Khan is not in favor of IMF. Now why this statement is released now is because USA wants Pakistan's help and USA is desperate.
I say let the swines sweat a bit more, no way are going to go against our national security interests and take on folks who are not attacking nor have any intention of doing so, in regards to IMF those swines are the biggest snakes of all time, avoid them at all cost, PM Khan is taking effective decisions which will see us out of this crisis, no question about it, the nation has a new found confidence it was previously lacking, I hope Asad Umar is on same page as PM Khan on this issue at it is a most crucial one, history will not be too kind to Asad Umar if he chooses the poisonous option of IMF.Kudos bhai

No, "do more" is overwhelmed by PM IK's presence. And as regards IMF the government is doing it's best to find other avenues but everybody should be prepared that Pakistan might have to go to IMF if all else fails. I don't see Saudi helping. I would be surprised if China did. So it might well be that circumstances leave no other option. We know Asad Umar has refused to remove the IMF option.
China is already helping us by paying for CPEC projects and many other things. I think China is already well engaged in financing. Saudis them selves are thinking on what to do. The problem is foreign reserves and trade deficit in front of the current govt. PTI has no ties with USA to get financed. China is providing loan to keep the govt functional and they have already transferred funds. PTI needs money to deliver big projects and that is why PTI is exploring different avenues.

Our current foreign reserves stand at $16.37 billion and our currency is going stable we are not in need of loan according to the situation. Even Moody's report also said Pakistan has money to pay loans and function easily.

PTI needs additional funds for their initial progress which is not available to them currently.

In our current economic situation we don't need IMF we can jump out of here with right policies. It is just that we need to tread carefully. Imran Khan and Assad umer are both against IMF.

That is why USA gave access to IMF because they know we can do with out IMF.

Here is the way I see it. The problem in Pakistan is everybody cries 'patriot' and 'Islam' at the drop of hat. The idea of giving is alien but the expectation is humongous. To fix Pakistan does not require understanding of nuclear physics. It's actually quite basic when you think about it.

  • Everybody pays taxes
  • Everybody pays the market rate for gas and electricity
  • Evrerybody is honest and does not 'pinch' gas or electricity or bribe the meter reader.
  • Everybody, whatever they, from teacher, doctor, policeman, road cleaner etc do their job sincerely.
  • Everybody stops using the government as a milch cow including PIA, PS, etc etc.

If this was done Pakistan would not need to beg Americans, Saudi's or Chinese. In fact the economy would stabilize and then take off. The government would have twice if not more revenue coming in to pursue social projects like give education to all children, provide healthcare to everybody and sort out housing and other issues the country faces.

However we all know Pakistani's are not about to just change tomorrow or after Jumma prayers - although those animals going as Mullahs could instead of causing grief use their sermons to make Pakistan's responsible citizens but that would be too much to expect.

So what are we left with. Compulsion. The government has to enforce policies that bring about the changes I enumerated. But this is where it get's tricky. Pakistani people want a prosperous Pakistan but are not prepared to make prosperous Pakistan. They want 'Naya Pakistan' but continue to live like they did under 'Purana Pakistan'. That of course will not work. So the government has no choice but to make decisions as enumerated and then force trhem through. The problem is when that happens our ignorant public will be on streets and rioting, burning, causing chaos in their own Pakistan. This will of course place immeasurable pressure on the government.

In fact the government knows this and is preparing for such eventuality.

ISLAMABAD: Three weeks after assuming power, senior leadership of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) reviewed the country’s political and economic situation and resolved to take some “tough decisions” in the coming days after evaluating the possibility of a strong public reaction.

A strategy was also devised at a meeting, which was presided over by PTI chairman and Prime Minister Imran Khan, to deal with possible reaction to government decisions in near future.

If khan goes to IMF he will loose every thing ... his whole agenda will b at stake... every thing from million jobs to 50k houses to dam... all will be gone

He needs to take the tough decision... the road less traveled...

Nations are not built by IMF but by the values they stand for
..its tough but its right

What does this mean? Making people pay taxes, making people pay market rates for gas and preventing electricity theft are going to be "tough decisions" because the public will be on the streets rioting. I read a article that the reason the government made a u-turn about Atif Mian was because intelligence sources reported that the far right was going to begin countrywide protests and PML-N would egg on these protests. This could suddenly have turned into national standoff that might have brought together all the government's opponents. Under such duress they made the u-turn. Most people might not give a darn about Ahmedis but this means if tomorrow the government tries to enforce gas or electricity price increase or other unpleasent but neccessary policy it could face riots and trouble.

Unlike common perception... financial discipline is going to be hugely popular step... just make sure that brunt is born by elite and spare the poor as much as you can...

Meaning double the tax on land cruiser... one who can pay 2 crore for a car shud be made to pay 4 if he wants the same car...its temporary remember...

But spare the guy on bike

You do know the bottom line is Pakistani's in Pakistan do not pay taxes. That is the root cause of the problems. They want government jobs, government grants, access to hospitals, efficient police, roads to drive on, army to be proud off but most are not prepared to pay taxes for it.

Thus the need for loans, loans, loans and more loans or asking ex-pat Pakistani's dole them out. I mean in a country of fcukin 200 million, less then 2 million pay taxes. Wtf?

Taxation is the root cause of this Problem. There has never been proper legislation done on taxation. Strange for a Consumer society.

Only by taking strong measures can Pakistan be imf secure. The government should have declared Financial emergency

And to put it in perspective the statistical probability of the Pakistani members of PDF paying taxes is going to be less then one in 100. Yes 1 in 100. Think about that. I know the good members of PDF are all paying taxes and I would not besmirch them or slander them. PDF only get's taxpayers. But I talk about the statistical probability. The chance of finding a Indian who pees in a toilet is greater then a tax paying Pakistani. And that is saying something.

Just as note ask those who live in the west what happens if you try to do the taxman in. The Inland Revenue is many ways is more feared then the police in UK. I think in US the IRS has similiar reputation. If the IR comes after you trust me your in big, big trouble.

After losing all leverage, Americans are trying to fire empty cartridges.
I hope and pray that we don't have to go to IMF or anyone ever again.

What happened to that massive oil discovery in Sindh? only if we could save on oil import bill we should be able to payback our debt in one decade.

For the time being government needs to expand the tax base. We need to bring all businesses in the tax net and impose some kind of tax on agriculture sector too. We must stand on our two feet. No one is going to help us anymore. the sooner we do it the better our chances. With popularity and trust on this government I think they can do it now.
