Its funny that back in 1976 , Canada ended its nuclear trade with India when India tested its first nuclear bomb using plutonium from a Canadian-donated test reactor. The ensuing fallout hampered bilateral relations for decades. Now with so much of potential trade with India , Canada made a deal today to sell more plutonium to India.

More than political expediency its the economical expediency. Paisa paatal tak pahunch gaya. :D

Why is Canada bending backwards to please India ?

It's somewhere b/w pleasing India & talking business (a mix of both). India is no doubt rising power (with second fastest GDP growth), Canada knows that, it cannot oppose Indian nuclear policy for so long, so like any other country it thought it's better to do nuclear trade with India rather than keep opposing it for the sake of opposition, as Canada's opposition will neither stop nuclear weapon program nor will it stop the growing nuclear industry of India. India needs fuel for it's growing nos. of nuclear reactors since it wants to achieve the target of around 63000 MW of nuclear energy production in 20 years time, this involves billions of dollars, so no sane country would like to stand out of this one.

is there any solid proof that India illegally used nuclear material from Canada's reactors, or is it just allegation?

India diverted the uranium, supplied by Canada, meant for a reactor supplied by canada !! This fuel was used to make 'SMILING BUDDHA' in 1974 which was the basis of NPT treaty...

Ahem , a neighbour with which Pakistan has fought 2.5 wars , I don't think so. But at an individual level, I have no hard feelings for anyone
