Police officer arrested in 2002 riots case remanded in judicial custody
Ahmedabad, Feb 26 (PTI) Police officer V R Gohil, arrested by the Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with the Naroda Gam riot case of 2002, was today remanded in judicial custody by a local court. Gohil, who was arrested yesterday after he surrendered before the court, was produced before metropolitan magistrate G M Patel.
The court sent him in judicial custody rejecting the demand of SIT for police remand. Gohil is facing charges of dereliction of duty in the Naroda Gam case where 11 people were killed by a mob on February 28, 2002.
He was the police inspector at the Naroda Police Station during the 2002 riots, and was posted in Mangrol taluka of Junagadh district as Circle Police Inspector, before his arrest. Meanwhile, the court also sent two BJP leader, Bipin Patel and Chunilal Prajapati, accused in Gulburg case, to five day police custody till March 2.
Both Patel and Prajapati are accused of intimidating the mob, arson and rioting in the Gulburg society case where 38 people including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafferi was killed by a mob during the post-Godhra riots. PTI.
