Police, Islamists clash in Bangladesh, dozens hurt

DHAKA (Reuters) - Police in Bangladesh Sunday fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse Islamist activists trying to enforce a nationwide strike over the removal of a Muslim phrase in the constitution, and witnesses said around 50 people were injured.

The clashes erupted when thousands of bludgeon-carrying Islamists cut off a stretch of highway leading to the capital's eastern suburbs with barricades.

The protesters also damaged several cargo trucks before the police crackdown, and some 100 people were detained.

The strike, which began two days after the country emerged from a 48-hour stoppage enforced by the opposition, was called to protest a recent amendment to the constitution which dropped the words "absolute faith and trust in Allah."

The Islamists also want to scrap "secularism" as a state principle in the Muslim-majority country.

The strike, which was called for by 12 Islamist parties, was however, largely ignored by most people in Bangladesh, where businesses and transportation was operating as normal.

The strike was spearheaded by the Bangladesh Islami Andolon, one of a handful of small Islamist parties that have no representation in parliament but who back the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, who is trying to force early elections.

The BNP lost to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League in the 2008 parliament polls and has since been trying to rally support of the Islamist and other groups.

The two women have dominated the south Asian country's often volatile politics for two decades and are likely to face off again in the next election due by end of 2013.

The situation is taking a very explosive turn.

The BNP aims at an early election while the AL is out to complete its tenure.

The unfortunate part of the whole issue, if one reads between the lines of Bangladesh news and politics, is that the politics has very little to do with the addressing of the priorities of the country as such.

It appears as if it is only the attempting of oneupmanship between the two families!

This is how it appears by reading the news of the country.

If one stands back from the warring of these two families and the politics that they are spawning, Bangladesh is a country with immense potential to make a mark on the world arena.

They don't understand the concept of 'tolerance' of having different political views. That 'tolerance' is an important part of any democracy and its survival. Otherwise, they're just living like the old days of East Pakistan in which at present; they are in charge of everything - or at least try to be

So you see, they just go about raging at everything. This is what happens when people don't have jobs and money and power become objects of worship.

Bangladesh needs to get rid of family/dynasty style politics. They have proved to be far too combative, confrontational and very intolerant (not in a religious sense).

every starting is same as you say sir but wait just wait every thing will be avelable after few years .look at 1998 kargil and then 2008 in ten years change was done .no one damn can imagune islamic sucide blast in pakistan in 1998 but in 2008 hundreds of blasts killing war .its better to let sleep these issues and work on education and health and jobs they will become civil and good automaticly .

There are million other issue that needs immediate attention yet this bone headed ugly turtle looking la-hasina had to anger the Alim and muslim community. Now Awami league viewed as enemy of Islam by Aalim-e-din. These police also view as enemy since they are over protecting these dalal and munafiqs.

These Awami polices deserve harsher punishment and it should deliver in due time.

I think those AL folks are going to face some pretty harsh retribution in the event the BNP wins. I seriously doubt if the AL would win in the next election provided that it's free and fair. If not free and fair, they might actually die

You do not understand. Liberal secularism will kill us. We need Kalima and presence of Islam in order to preserve our culture and sovereignty. Take a look at our geographic location compared to yours. You are connected with main land(Islamic world) yet we are surrounded by Hindus and Buddhist. Take Islam itself. One Prophet, One Book and yet so many derivative and all are at the throat of each other.

I say, keep religion at home and in your heart.

Outside, let the nation's priorities dictate the course.
